How Parents Can Teach Their Children to Be Responsible Drivers

When a child is old enough to earn a driver's license, many parents are rightfully concerned about the child's level of responsibility and safety behind the wheel. Many teenagers are impulsive, and their thought processes are not always logical or mature. Use these four tips to help your child to drive safely and act with responsibility when he or she is behind the wheel. Taking a Driver's Education or Defensive Driving Class Most states require that a person pass a driver's education class in order to take the test to get a driver's license. Even if your area does not require driver's education, it is worthwhile to pay for this class for your child. The classes teach safe driving skills and how to respond to different situations. A defensive driving class could also be helpful for staying safe on the road. Not Driving Under the Influence It is important to teach your child not to drive under the influence of any substance. While many parents teach their kids to never drink and drive, it is just as critical to explain about not driving after taking certain medications or drugs. Even an over-the-counter medication such as Benadryl taken for seasonal allergies could cause unexpected drowsiness. Your child should also not drive after using any sort of experimental or illegal drug. Avoiding Distractions Every driver should avoid distractions while on the road. Teenagers and new drivers are especially susceptible to distracted driving. They have yet to develop strong driving skills, and distractions further reduce their ability to drive responsibly. Teenagers should avoid talking or texting on their phones while driving, fiddling with their MP3 players or music, putting on makeup or eating while driving. Driving With the Children and Modeling Good Habits Spend as much time as possible in the car with your teen driver. Observe your child as he or she drives and encourage good habits while offering better solutions to potentially dangerous driving behaviors. Model responsible driving when you are behind the wheel. Your children will see what you do and will use your behavior as an example of what they will do when behind the wheel. Children should be impressed upon that driving is not a right. It is a privilege that requires a high level of attention, safety and responsibility. If your child makes poor choices, take those privileges away for a while.
