In Supply, chain operations manufacturers, wholesalers, and dispensers need to communicate the data effectively to deliver high-quality products to the customers. The supply chain is threatened by several persistent and ongoing incursions. These activities include misplacement, counterfeiting, theft, and diversion of products. A comprehensive supply chain data security system will do much to mitigate the risk. Implementation of serialization help to organize product data through automated systems and serial number scanners. Serialization is the process of assigning a unique number to each product and entering the details of the product into the system against their serial number. This information is then updated on a real-time basis when the product moves down to the supply chain and is accessible to only authorized persons.
Data security and access:
Serialization, by design and definition, generates and captures electronic data as an integral part of the physical batches of products. This electronic data move through the supply chain, and conce
s of who owns and who should have access to these data are important. Security of this information should be taken seriously. Manufacturers and distributors will retain access to data generated for each product through serialization. Serialization secure and protect the integrity of products by enabling manufacturers to have access to authentication data to fully understand the extent and location of product that could be falsified.
Item level Traceability:
Item level serialization refers to assign a serial number to every sealable unit. This will add an extra layer of security to the individual product track and trace. The serial number of the products can be generated manually through a serialized inventory management software according to the desired pattern. For example, a company can add a specific prefix to the serial number which helps to identify at once which company owns the product. This will provide data integrity and monitor the entry of counterfeit products into the supply chain. In case of loss of any product during the supply chain, the system will hold serial number and information of the product and help to easily retrieve the product.
Product Authentication:
At each supply chain node requirements to authenticate products should be considered for the full benefit of point-of dispense authentication. Serialization enables authentication at each supply chain node and adds an extraordinary measure that would only be warranted in unusually troublesome market conditions.
Aggregation and inference:
For data aggregation and interference for the manufacturer, warehouse personnel and shippers serialization provides enrichment and harmonization for a cost-efficient and realistic way to address product data credibility and connectivity problem. A serialized platform helps to utilize and harmonized data from multiple sources. This data aggregation through serialization results are vague as exchanging standardized information is an impossible task for most stakeholders. The easy aggregation will provide faster clearance times, a more transparent and predictable process for supply chain operations.
Bottom Lines
The true value of serialization is in the protection of the integrity of product data in the supply chain, providing additional assurance that the products deliver are genuine. Serialization can be more effectively addressed through a carefully considered, standardized approach.
