Drug and alcohol addictions have a long history of affecting personal relationships. It can unintentionally make an individual act out and engage in unusual behavior. It messes with a person’s emotions and thoughts, which can make it challenging to maintain successful relationships. Since an addict gets more pleasure with the substance or alcohol, they generally put less time and energy in their relationship. After a certain time, the following elements typically start to present themselves. Secrecy Addicts tend to keep many things secrets from their loved ones. Since their lives generally revolve around drugs and alcohol, they don’t inform people close to them to avoid judgment, resentment, anger, and other strong emotions. They are not typically aware of how much their life is spiraling out of control, and most of them only realize when the situation goes too far. rnSmall lies may not seem like they are harmful, but they don’t stop. A person would have to keep lying to cover up previous fabrications. That eventually leads to that person living a double life. Violence Another prevalent problem with addiction is violence. It is an awful and traumatic effect that has a very adverse impact on relationships. Regular couples may fight or argue over specific issues, but they resolve it in some way. But an addict will have heightened emotions and less control over their body, resulting in abusive behavior. People living with an addict need to be very careful, as they and other members of the household might be in danger. The addict can also sometimes be victimized by their partners, as they might have anger issues towards them. The rage could be influenced by several factors; for instance, the addict might be using up all the savings to purchase their poison. Co-Dependence The addiction can also affect any person in a co-dependent relationship with an addict. However, they might enjoy taking care of the addict or the feeling of always being needed. Although these people are filling their own needs of closeness and affection, they are doing it for all the wrong reasons. These relationships are among the most toxic, and the connection doesn’t necessarily have to be romantic. Treatment Options Before getting treatment, the addict needs to realize they have a problem. If they don’t know something is wrong, they will not likely engage in any treatment method. Treatment depends on the type of addiction and the severity of it. Moreover, the overall health of the person in question is also taken into account. Once ready, there are plenty of treatment options for an addict. If the addict has to carry on with work, studies, or other regular tasks, an outpatient drug rehab program would be the best option. These programs are personalized to every individual, making them better than the usual 12 steps program. For an addict with a severe problem, it might be necessary to enroll in an inpatient drug rehab facility. They give around the clock care to all the residents and provide the best treatment possible.
