Aesthetic standards given by magazine cover Photoshop smiles have created a real mass hysteria of having snow-white teeth. But alongside the teeth whitening methods applied with or without a dentist’s recommendation, comes the disturbing teeth whitening sensitivity that many people get. Desensitizing agents Because it is a nearly unavoidable issue, researchers have lately given teeth whitening sensitivity a more important part of their time. They have created the so-called “desensitizing agents” and incorporated them in teeth whitening products’ formulas, but such solutions are indicated to use during the whitening process itself too. Below there is a list of most common desensitizing agents dentists use in the teeth whitening procedures: *Orajel advanced tooth desensitizer (applied during the whitening procedure) *KoR whitening deep bleaching (applied before and after whitening procedure) *Ultraez desensitizing gel syringe (contains potassium nitrate and fluoride) How chemical components of the desensitizing agents react The most commonly used desensitizing component is fluoride because it acts directly on the dentinal tubes by temporarily reducing their dimensions and provides a bigger stability of the fluid inside the tubules. If this fluid moves, then tooth sensitivity occurs and its intensity can vary from disturbing to very painful. Potassium nitrate penetrates the tooth until it reaches the pulp and acts like an anesthetic, but patients’ sensitivity to this component differs from case to case. However, potassium nitrate has no effect on reducing nerve inflammation that occurs when the fluid inside the tooth’s tubules moves. There is research going on regarding the action of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP). This component is known to help strengthening the enamel, but it seems that it does not do much regarding the protection of the open ends of the dentin tubes. For that matter, Minerals and resin work better. Desensitizers that replace the destroyed plugs are needed to stop the fluid from moving and thus prevent teeth sensitivity. Painkillers with an anti-inflammatory effect come at hand when desensitizers fail to fully accomplish their task. These classes of medicine (pills or injectables) reduce the irritation of inflamed tooth nerves and thus minimize the discomfort and teeth sensitivity. Whiter teeth are always nicer to look at and generate more confidence to any individual, but these advantages can bring a huge discomfort and even painful teeth sensitivity. Every dentist’s recommendation before going through a teeth whitening procedure is to seek for accurate information about teeth sensitivity prevention.
