Earlier in 2012, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) passed providing American women with free access to preventive health services —no co-pay, no premium increases and no deductible to worry about. Truly free healthcare. The victory was hard won and can be vastly contributed to the voice and hard work of Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), who proposed this coverage be included in the ACA. She stood firm despite attacks from the opposition. Senator Mikulski took a stand for women across the country. Honor her efforts and take a stand for your health – take advantage of the preventive care services now available to you. Of more than 60 preventive services, The Affordable Care Act includes providing women with: Free annual well-woman visits and follow-up visits, as neededrnNo-cost screenings for domestic or intimate partner violencernFree annual screening for HIV and counseling for other sexually transmitted infections for sexually-active womenrnFree DNA screening for HPV (human pappilomavirus) every three years for women over 30rnFree gestational diabetes screening for women who are pregnantrnFree comprehensive breastfeeding support for moms-to-be and new momsrnFree access to FDA-approved contraception, including sterilization procedures, but not any form of abortionrnSandra Fluke, a well-known advocate of the ACA discussed an important note to women regarding the free access to contraceptives on msnbc.com. She wrote, “…it [contraception coverage policy] is shrouded in misinformation. No woman should hesitate to take advantage of contraception coverage or any of these services because she fears doing so will increase her or anyone else’s taxes. Although other federal programs do, and should, provide funding for contraception and health services for the poorest women in our communities, this regulation has no impact on anyone’s taxes because it is not funded by the government.” Women may receive these preventive services through their private insurance company. This applies to new or renewed policies as of August 1, 2012. Talk to your health insurance company to learn more about taking advantage of these services. The ACA offers women the opportunity to care for their personal well-being, so they can care for those that love and depend on them the most. And, there is one more thing all women can do to ensure that the well-being of their loved ones is supported – a life insurance policy. Many women feel they are not eligible for life insurance or don’t need it, but everyone knows that every woman has someone that loves and depends on her to be there – it is the nature of being female.
