How the SQL Server database gets corrupted?

The database file of Microsoft SQL Server (.mdf) gets corrupted due to many common reasons like Power surges, Hardware failures, Bad Hard Disk Sector, Improper SQL Terminations, DBA Faults, SQL User faults, etc and situations, when the corruption in SQL Server database file takes place, user face many complicated errors and different problematic issue like business downtime, data loss, also occur.

What all Kinds of Corruption Issues Take Place?
Many types of database corruptions (repairable and irreparable both) can take place in SQL Server database and some repairable corruption issues are mentioned below:

  • Corruption due to Inaccurate Meta-Data Space- Sometimes the SQL database corruption occurs in Non-Clustered Indexes and users face many errors similar to the one under mentioned error:
“Msg 8942, Level 16, State 1, Line 1rnTable error: Object ID 181575685, index ID 4, page (3:224866). Test (sorted[i].offset >= max) failed. Slot 0, offset 0x9f overlaps with the prior row”
Like inaccurate Space Meta Data corruption, this corruption is also not serious and can be repaired easily by deleting the non clustered indexes and recreating them. CheckDB Repair commands also do the same but, it is recommended to do it manually because unexpected data loss can happen in CheckDB Repair command.
  • Corruption in Non-clustered Indexes- When SQL database corruption takes place due to inaccurate space metadata then, the users face many severe errors similar to the one, which is mentioned below:
“Msg 2508, Level 16, State 3, Line 1rn The In-row data RSVD page count for object "Broken1", index ID 0, partition ID 76911687695381, alloc unit ID 76911687695381 (type In-row data) is incorrect. Run DBCC UPDATEUSAGE."
This error doesn’t create serious problem as it can be repaired with the command (Run DBCC UPDATEUSAGE), which mentioned in it.
These were the repairable corruptions of SQL Server database but, irreparable corruptions can also occur in the database of Microsoft SQL Server. In cases, when an irreparable corruption occurs in SQL Server database, the chances of data loss become high for a user because irreparable corruptions are those in which, the CheckDB Repair command fails to repair SQL Server database.
