Have you noticed that certain marijuana strains have a more pleasant smell, while others are a little more pungent? The compounds that are responsible for these unique smells are called terpenes. These are a class of volatile, synergistic hydrocarbons that are plentiful in the plant kingdom. Terpenes can be used to reinvigorate your cannabis oils, extracts and raw hemp buds to improve its flavor and even influence its effect profile. Here are the ways to safely add terpenes to your cannabis products.

Adding Terpenes to Hemp Buds

If you have a few dry buds and want to enhance their effect using terpenes, remember to not go overboard. Terpenes are highly concentrated so a little can go a long way. There are several ways to use terpenes with buds. You can also moisten the buds by adding a drop or two of oil per gram of flower. You can also lightly coat the pipe bowl with it. If you are using a grinder, you can add a bit of the oil first before grinding the bud and vaping or smoking it.

Adding Terpenes to Distillate

Cannabis distillates usually have a high THC potency and are made using a solvent. This process boils of the terpenes, so manufacturers have to supplement them afterwards to make sure that the strength, content and effects are up to standard. The process is quite simple. First, pick the terpene profile or isolated terpene that you love to try. Pour the distillate into a glass jar and add one or two drops of terpenes per gram of oil. Stir it well and allow the mixture to infuse overnight.

Adding Terpenes to Concentrates

Concentrates or dabs are very popular in the cannabis community. These are solvent-extract marijuana doses that take the form of sticky oils. To consume them, they are heated on a hot surface and inhaled through a dab rig. The most common concentrates are butane hash oil and shatter. When using concentrates, add only 1 to 5 percent of the total weight in terpenes. Start with 2 percent and add more as necessary. Remember that thicker consistencies may need more to begin with. • Shatter. This is a potent concentrate that goes through an additional filtration process to remove oils and waxes, which filters out the terpene as well. Replace them by adding 0.02 grams for every gram of shatter. Remember to add the terpene before the shatter dries. You can also add it right before vaping the shatter. • BHO and Rosin. With butane hash oil, first pour it in a glass jar and add 1 to 3 drops of terpene. After mixing, see is the smell and taste are up to your liking. Otherwise, add more drops until you get your desired results. Once you are done, allow the mixture to sit for 24 hours to allow the terpenes to infuse with the oil. Use the same steps when adding terpenes to rosin.

Adding Terpenes to Oils

Add terpenes to promote the specific effects of THC or CBD oils. Follow the 2 percent rule or add 0.2 millimeters per gram of oil. When adding terpenes, use a dropper or syringe for a more precise approach. You can also add terpene isolate to each dosage. Remember to start slowly, so do not pour the 2 percent of terpenes right away. Start with 1 percent first and see how you react with the added terpenes. If you find that the results are not that different, you can always add more. Now that you have an idea how to work terpenes into your favorite cannabis products, you can start to experiment and mix terpenes to create a unique aroma and flavor. Enjoy!
