Another important element in search engine optimization that you need to consider aside form assessing the market and the niche itself is to know your competition. It might be harsh to say but if you will be going up against the big boys and you are just a nobody in that niche then it is a suicide attempt.

But it doesn’t mean that you should just give up. A market is vague and there are many niches within a market and a lot of keywords within a niche. You can compete for the same services as the big boys but not directly until you have established your business and your brand within that field.

Assessing your SEO competition is as important as the number of traffic the keyword pays. Various tools are available on the web that will you assess this but here are the most important things that you should be laying your eyes one.
The age of the domain – Normally the age of the domain will tell you how strong the company is and how well their efforts are being paid off. The older the domain the tougher it is to go against them.

The page rank of the competition – This will give you an idea how well they do on their organic search engine optimization campaigns. If their page rank isn’t high then it is a better term for you to go against them.

The number of back links and the quality – The back links of a particular domain will dictate mostly the result within the searches on Google, having an idea how many links they have will set your target on how many you have achieve, however, we all know that it is not a numbers. Be sure to take the quality of the links into consideration. The quality of the links is dependent to the sites linking to them.

The higher the page ranks of that site the better the link. Take note that the difference between the page ranks is exponentially, meaning to say page rank two is ten times better than one and page rank four is one hundred thousand times better that page rank one and so on.

Anchor text – Aside from page rank analysis, it would be helpful if you have an idea on how the top ranking site got their so be sure to spy on anchor text carefully.
Ultimately if you want to be on top and stay on top, you have to put continuous efforts of search engine optimization since everyday a new business is being established and your competition keeps growing.
