Everyone has been subjected to bad online marketing techniques at least once in their lives, whether it was email spamming or a million pop ups. How did that make you feel? Angry, frustrated, annoyed? Why then should you, as an internet marketer, be implementing similar techniques? You shouldn’t be, and this is how to avoid them:
Deceptive emailsWhile many online marketers think it is a great idea to use the word ‘urgent’ in the subject line of their emails, all it does is leave behind a trail of disgruntled recipients. If your email is not urgent – and if you are an online marketer, chances are it isn’t – don’t label it as such. Instead, write informative but short subject lines that will grab a potential customer’s attention and compel them to open the email and read further.
Fake or out of date contact detailsWhen coming across deals and sales on the internet, potential customers will generally want to make sure that, firstly, the offer is still valid and, secondly, that they will see the product and not lose their money for good. A good online marketer should already know that providing fake or out of date contact details is buying a one-way ticket to no sales. Instead, ensure that your email account and telephone number is constantly attended during business hours, and be sure to frequently check links to email and contact forms are working.
Price hidingMany online marketers will defend their decision to place the price right at the bottom of the page, buried underneath lines of text and images, by saying that they do not want to scare potential customers off with the price before they have seen that the product offers fantastic value. In all reality, people are just scrolling down the page, ignoring your text and images, to see the price first. Instead, don’t appear dishonest by placing the price up front and centre with a good image of the product.
SpammingThis is the bane of any internet user’s existence. People do not appreciate being sent hundreds of emails, all within minutes of each other, nor do they appreciate being sent information that is useless or completely irrelevant to them and their needs. As an online marketer, you need to constantly remind yourself that if it isn’t interesting or helpful people will not read it. Instead, send your potential customers emails and enewsletters that are relevant and don’t over do it – one of two emails a week is acceptable.
Don’t fall victim to the usage of bad online marketing techniques – this can have a very detrimental affect on your business. By avoiding the above techniques and, instead, going about your online marketing strategy the right way, you are more likely to see lasting and beneficial results.
