These days, knowing how to become genuinely interested in other people is a must-have skill. Why? Well, that’s because you get to close deals more often that way. You get to put your ideas on the forefront. You get to convince the rest of the group to follow your lead.

Knowing how to become genuinely interested in other people obviously has many benefits. Here are some ways to help you achieve just that.

1) Mirroring

One way on how to become genuinely interested in other people is by mirroring their gestures and their words.

For example, if your boss often uses the word “fantastic,” it wouldn’t hurt to insert that expression into your conversation every once in a while. Just don’t make it too obvious though or it might backfire on you.

If your boss uses “fantastic” as an expression, don’t use it in that same way. Instead, use it to describe something else. You can just say “we’re making fantastic progress on the New Thorn deal.”

When a friend often uses hand gestures, it won’t hurt to try using a few yourself. Being on the same wavelength helps build excellent rapport.

2) Something in Common

Some people just have the knack for conversation. The first thing they usually do is find something they have in common with the other person. This is one of the most effective ways on how to become genuinely interested in other people.

Have you been to the same restaurants? Do you like the same movies? How about that upcoming team building session? By finding something in common with another person, and making it the topic of discussion, you are creating a comfortable environment between the both of you. This then helps other people feel more at ease in your company.

3) Being Yourself

If you want to learn how to become genuinely interested in other people, you should first stay true to yourself. Fake feelings never got anybody anywhere in the long run.

Don’t put up pretenses because people are turned off by fakeness. And some people are very good at sniffing these things out. So be your usual self. It will help people get to know you better. And you’ll also be more inclined to show genuine interest in them in return.

Learning how to become genuinely interested in other people is easy as 1-2-3. All you have to do is follow these tips and you won’t have any problems getting people to warm up to you!
