You may have the skills to build ecommerce website but how can you build an ecommerce website that you do not own? This article will show you how to create a small business website for others who need your talent and skills in web designing.

Treat the business as your own

The first thing that you should do is talk to your client to know more about the business. Talking about goals and other specifics that the client wants will make you understand the business better and be able to plan out a website that is relevant for your client.

While you build ecommerce website, you have to treat the business like your own. Come up with different theme colors, headers, navigational structure, buttons, and graphic designs and conduct a study as to how effective your website design and layout is through conducting surveys and heat maps. You can ask your friends or random people to do the evaluation for you to get a good feedback of what you have designed. Getting a good feedback will not only help you in finding the weaknesses of the website design you implemented but as well as get some work going to take away those weaknesses.

Come up with a Plan and Do it

One of the weaknesses of web designers is that they do know how to plan out or make a schedule of the project but not strictly follow it. Once you make a schedule of what has to be done while creating an ecommerce website, strictly follow the plan. You can sign up for a RescueTime account or any other similar tools which you can review at the end of the day of how well you spent your time.

When planning a project, use the SMART criteria: Specific and Significant, Measurable and Manageable, Attainable and Appropriate, Relevant and Results-oriented, and Timely or Timebound. Set out goals and write down achievements as to check if you have been an effective web designer.

Publish a Beta Version

When the website is almost done, you can make a Beta Version of it and run it for at least three months to know of glitches and read for feedback. Going out for a test run (most especially for landing pages and other images that suggest a call to action to customers) of the website is a very effective way in looking for efficiency or inefficiency. Use Google Analytics to see how your customers are using your website and how eager they are to check out other pages through bounce rates and other factors. You can implement heat mapping to see where most of your customers go while browsing your website. Create a page where customers can place a feedback. This can help the website owner and yourself in evaluating the success of your website.

Building an ecommerce website for others is very challenging as it does not only question your skills in making an effective website but also it is a way of helping others reach out their business goals through your skills set.
