If you are looking to buy a home in the Dominican Republic, you will first need to assess what exactly your needs are. For instance, do you want a house or a condo? If you are considering a house, it does mean more privacy, but it also means more responsibility. For example, if these things are not furnished to you, you will need to come up with them somehow: an alarm system, appliances, furniture, and a generator, because the Dominican Republic is known for having many blackouts. All of this will add on to the costs of purchasing your home. You will also need homeowner's insurance to insure against theft and natural disasters, among other typical hardships.
If you are considering a condo, you will have all of the same options, but less responsibility, as the yard maintenance will not be up to you, and other things of that nature. One great option is Alquiler Apartamentos. The least expensive option for you would be to consider a previously owned condo just outside the city limits. There are great prices in this area, but the downside is that there will be excessive noise and considerably more blackouts.
If your budget is a bit larger, you can also opt for a home or condo in the central zone of the city, such as Naco, Serralles, or Piantini. These options are normally furnished with all of the amenities, such as generators, parking areas, and security guards. They are also constructed of the most premium materials for the most longevity of use. Price ranges are from $1500 to rent and $240,000 to own.
If you are leaning more towards a home near the beach, there are many options in the Dominican Republic, such as Puerta Plata. There are paradises unknown to the world in the Dominican Republic, and the price ranges here will vary based on beach frontage or by how close they are to the beach. Obviously, the closer you are to the beach, the higher the price range. There are even resort communities, such as the Cap Cana with the golf courses designed by a truly great golf legend, Jack Nicklaus. If you are moving here for retirement, this is the perfect paradise in which to do so.
Finally, you simply need to find the right real estate agent that will help you find exactly what you have been looking for; one that will take into account your budget while still holding true to what your passions are. It is best to seek one that can also speak your language so as to be able to negotiate for you on your behalf. It is best to choose an agent that is part of a larger firm, as Dominican laws are not the same, you will not know what you may be signing, and you could fall into a real estate scam and lose your life savings.
