Although bringing them to an assisted community is easier, caring for them yourself is better because you can be sure that they are taken care of well. Also, many seniors feel happier when they are near their loved ones and they are in the comforts of their own home. Here are tips on how to care for them to get you started. • Prepare the home. Learning how to prepare your home for elderly care is important. Most elderly people aren’t as strong as they used to be, so you need to think about their safety when you bring them home. There are things that you can do yourself such as installing grab bars and providing adequate illumination around the house. If you have the budget, you can also hire a contractor to do a remodel to make sure that the house is completely safe for them. • Hire someone. If you are working and you must leave them at home during the day, it is suggested that you hire a caregiver to look after them while you are away. This also ensures that they eat and take their medications on time. This caregiver can also be their driver because it may be unsafe for elders to drive and it can be difficult to tell them not to. • Make sure they get exercise. It is a proven fact that exercise can help prevent diseases. This is also important to keep their joints lubricated and bones strong. If you will notice, elders who exercise regularly look younger and feel stronger. Tai chi, yoga, and walking are great forms of exercise for them. Aside from exercise, they also need to eat healthy food especially if they have high blood pressure or what not. • Let them socialize. The elders can feel lonely and purpose-less very easily, so it is important for them to socialize. They may join a community of elders in your locality or better yet, let them volunteer to activities that will give back to others. With their many years of experience, they sure have a lot of wisdom to share. • Get the documents ready. It is imperative to prepare the needed documents because elderly people can be forgetful. One of the documents they need to prepare is a power of attorney. This will come in handy for the time when they cannot manage their finances or properties anymore. It ensures that they have somebody they trust to do it for them. Another is their will which needs to be kept and prepared by their attorney. Aside from these tips, it is also important that you spend time with them. Taking some time to be with them just to talk and listen to their stories can make a huge difference in their daily lives. It is a must that their emotional, social, psychological, and physical needs are met so that they still feel good about themselves in spite of their age.
