Glands are the organs of the human body that produce important liquids which help in regulating the flow of hormones. They also help the hormones to coordinate so the body metabolism is not affected. There are two types of glands in the human body as follows: • Exocrine: These glands function to release the liquids outside the body. Tears and sweat are the examples of exocrine glands. They are also known as ducted glands. • Endocrine: These glands function to release the liquids which are directly passed into the bloodstream. These glands are also known as ductless glands. The endocrine glands are further classified into different types as follows: o Thymus: This helps the body in building strong immune system o Pancreas: This helps the process of digestion and in production of insulin o Thyroid: They help is regulating metabolism o Prostrate: They help in regulating blood pressure and sexual potency o Adrenal: They generally function in response to stress o Salivary: They help in production of saliva and help in keeping the mouth and the parts of the digestive system moist Lymph Nodes: Lymph is a bean-shaped gland located in the neck, groin and under the arms. It is one of the components of the lymphatic system which functions to circulate the lymph node fluid and nutrients throughout our body. Lymph nodes also form an important part of our immune system. They help in destroying viruses, bacteria and other unwanted materials. Symptoms of Glands: The symptoms of glands are generally based on what type of gland is affected. One of the common symptoms is swelling of the glands. In this, the glands get enlarged and are referred as lymphadenopathy. Some of the other symptoms are as follows: • High feverrn• Night sweatsrn• Weight lossrn• Severe pain Causes of Glands: Following are some of the main causes of swollen glands: • Infectionrn• Inflammationrn• Cancer Treatments of Glands: Many physical exams, blood tests and the lymph node biopsy test help in diagnosis of swollen glands. The treatment then may consist of pain relieving drugs, surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
