Today there are many type of topsoil available in the market and gardener believes that there is specific topsoil for every type of gardening. If you are looking for topsoil then it is very important that you choose right topsoil because it is develop to contain the necessary nutrients for a variety of planting. Before going in details first this is to discuss is what topsoil is. It is exactly what the name suggests. It is the top layer of the soil that will contain all organic material and nutrients that are necessary for the growth of plants. It is about 3 to 7 inches thick and almost all biological activities take place in this area.

Many homeowners has planning to grow their own vegetable at home lawn and for the growth of the plants and vegetables topsoil is must because it contains highly nutritive organic elements which are required by plants in the process of photosynthesis. It is very important for vegetables to grow healthily and fresh. Plants are just like human being they also need nutrients and minerals for their growth like us and they get it from soil. Topsoil formation is the result of biodegradation and decomposition process and it takes about 100 of years to form a thin layer of high nutritive top soil.

Through my years of experience I found that there is time to buy topsoil for garden but some gardeners are refuse to accept it. In their opinion existing soil is enough but this is true only if the existing soil is of sufficient quality. Those whose garden’s soil is not of good quality they must go for topsoil and with the purchase of a layer of topsoil they will see the difference in growth of plants and vegetables. It will considerably enhance the quality of lawns, plants, vegetables and flowers.
Soil testing is the most common and reliable method to evaluate the quality of the topsoil. There are many factors that are to be taken in mind while evaluating the quality of soil. These factors include:

  • Texture
  • Color
  • Topsoil pH level

Texture of the topsoil depends upon the type of soil. Sandy soil has large particles, porous and with large spaces between its soils particles. It observe high amount of water but retain very less which is available to the plants. Loam soil is also porous but observe lees amount of water and retain good amount of water in its particle. Clay soil has small particles and dense with few air spaces between the particles. It retains the large amount of water in its particle that is provided to the plants.
