We have all had it. Sometimes it sneaks up quickly and leaves just as fast. Other times it creeps up and lingers. What is it? That tell-tale signs that start in the back of your throat, which you might be mean you are getting sick. However, sometimes it lingers with no other symptoms. It makes simple things like talking, swallowing and drinking and eating, difficult. Sore throats can have many different causes and effects. It is important to figure out what is going on with your throat before you start a treatment. If it is something like a simple allergy, all the cold medicine in the world is not going to help you. To figure out what is causing the discomfort it is important to list causes and rule them out. When you get a cold your throat can react in a negative way. Your tonsils might swell from the collection of the virus, causing the pain. Mono is another virus that can cause throat pain. Influenza is also a virus that can affect the throat. However, if you get a sore throat and have no other symptoms such as a runny nose, congestion and or fever, this is probably not the case. If it is, cold medicine or a trip to the doctor will be in order. Bacterial infections such as Strep Throat need to be treated with antibiotics. If left untreated it can cause serious illness. Other things to take into account our time of the year, location or smoking. If it is late spring and you live in an area where vegetation is abundant, such as a high agriculture area, chances are you have some form of allergy. Allergies can manifest later in life as well, so if you are around animals you have never been allergic to in the past, see what happens when you spend time away from them. Many times with allergies a doctor’s prescription is necessary to combat that scratchy throat, however, there are some great over the counter medicines that might suffice. Smoking is something that many people overlook when determining where that sore throat is coming from. Those that have smoked for years forget that it might be a cause and look for other reasons. However, the chemicals contained in tobacco smoke can be an irritant, causing a lot of damage to your throat. Other chemicals that could be in your home or work can cause discomfort as well. If you work in an area that deals with chemicals or dust it is important to take the necessary steps by wearing a mask to protect both throat and lungs. Pinpointing the long term sore throat can be difficult. Things such as acid reflux can cause damage to the esophagus which will make the throat very sore. There are many over the counter medicines to combat this condition. Other things such as snoring can irritate the linings in the throat. Causes can be sleep apnea or even weight. Eating a healthy diet and dropping a few pounds can do the trick. However, there could be other conditions causing the snoring that only a Physician can diagnose and treat. Working or playing in a loud environment where shouting is necessary can also cause irritation making your throat sore. To combat symptoms of a sore throat it might be a good idea to pick up some cough drops. Or if you prefer more natural remedies, hot water with lemon and honey has always been a favorite. Also, herbal tea can help soothe the linings of the throat. Things such as a humidifier can help if you live in a dry climate. It will help keep you breathing through your nose at night rather than your mouth. For allergies find a good over the counter medicine. Many that were only available through prescription are now available to everyone. If these causes have been ruled out it is imperative to seek the help of a doctor. Something more serious might be going on and only a qualified Physician will be able to diagnose and treat the problem. They can also help you pinpoint the source of a sore throat if it something like a reaction to chemicals.
