Commissioning a custom piece of furniture is a highly rewarding experience as one needs to be an active participant in the process of design and creation. It can also have its moment of frustration as the process is not instant; it requires patience and the development of trust amongst all the parties involved. However the result is a unique and personal creation that will be purpose built to one's own specifications. One has the opportunity to create an heirloom that can be passed between generations for decades, perhaps even centuries, to come.

There are three steps to the process of commissioning furniture: Commission, design and build. Here is an overview of each step and some tips on how to navigate through.

Commissionr
The decision on who to have built a piece is a journey in itself. If one lives in a major metropolitan area, it can be relatively easy to find a maker. The Internet is also a key resource as most makers who take on commissioned work will have some online presence to showcase their work. One may also check with local lumber providers for a recommendation, too.

Discuss with each potential maker the type of piece one has in mind. This is also the right time to discuss budget. Some makers have a stable of existing designs that can be customized or one can take a completely bespoke approach to create something completely unique. Find out something about the maker's influences and industry experience, as well as the number of clients. This is also a good time to inquire about client references.

Designr
This is the heart of the process, where ideas become concrete and one's vision takes form. Based on earlier discussion the maker may have some initial sketches and ideas to share. Do not feel wed to anything at this point. The discussion will also be around potential types of wood, finish and any other practical necessities, like lighting and such. Based on this meeting the craftsman will provide one with more specific plans.

After a time, detailed drawings for the piece will be shared and a recommendation for species of wood, hardware and finish will be presented. At this point be sure one is completely clear on all aspects of the piece and ask plenty of questions. Even if one likes the plan, always ask the maker if there were other options he or she considered. Never feel like you must take the design on the first go. A commission is about a sharing of vision, so it is important you are completely happy before commencing with the project.

Once the final design and materials are agreed upon, a deposit is required to begin the building process. Typically this is about one-third the cost, but can vary depending on the cost of materials. It is also good practice to agree on a timeline for completion.

Buildr
For the client, one mostly now sits back to let the maker perform. If the project will be lengthy it is perfectly acceptable to ask for progress reports or even photographs of the project as it is completed. One may also be called upon for other input. Once completed and finished, a delivery date (and installation, if required) will be set. At this point the last payment will be due. It is wise to find out about any special care or maintenance requirements for the piece.

Finally completed, the owner can now enjoy the commissioned piece. The tangible results from a furniture commission is truly unique in today's world, as it is something that is meant to be used but also enhance the look of one's home. It is a very rewarding journey and soon after one may start to consider the possibilities for additional pieces.
