Selling a home is never straightforward, even if each detail is in the right place and things goas expected. If things are not working as they should, it can be a nightmare and, if your estate agent is a cause for complaint, things can seem almost unbearable. It is possible to dosomething about a poor service though and by law, estate agents in the UK must be approved by the Office of Fair Trading, the OFT. This means they must be a member of one of two schemes: the Ombudsman Services: Property or the The Property Ombudsman.
Even before selecting an agent to work with, you should check for their membership to these schemes. If you can't find evidence of their membership - and this should be fairly easy - the agents should be reported to Trading Standards. It is advised to check this before entering into any agreement or financial deals with your estate agent.
Should you have a problem through the course of the contract, you should register a complaint with the firm directly in the first instance. The best estate agents will do everything they can toresolve any issues satisfactorily, without the need for any further action. Should a solution not be found, the complaint should be registered with the relevant scheme. In the case where an agent is a member of both schemes, which is preferable, it is possible to register a complaint with both.
To ensure there is never a need to complain about an estate agent's service, it is well worth seeking a trusted recommendation.
