Once you have decided you are ready to have a baby, waiting for that all-important positive pregnancy test can seem both long and torturous. The disappointment of failure every month can be upsetting, especially if you feel you are doing everything right. But making a baby is not an easy business. There are so many chance factors that go into conception and the best advice at this time is to be patient, get to know your body and, above all, remain stress free. Top tips While it can seem perfectly obvious what needs to be done to fall pregnant, there are things you can do to help aid conception. - Use an ovulation calendar. A menstrual cycle is not always perfectly regular and it could be you are missing the small window when conception can take place. An ovulation calendar gives you a more accurate idea of the best time to start trying. The optimum time is two days before ovulation and on the day itself. - Have plenty of sex. Three times a week is the recommended amount and don’t just stick to the days you think you might be ovulating, as your calculations might not be accurate. - Get the right position. The missionary (the man on top), scissors position (like two pairs of scissors at right angles) and doggy style all give deep penetration. Try to keep lying flat afterwards for at least 15 minutes. Stay stress-free Of all the advice, keeping stress-free can be the most vital one. It is so often the case that when couples, who have been trying for months, finally relax and stop trying so hard they suddenly fall pregnant. Stress effects can be a real barrier to conception so here are some simple ways to keep calm and get making babies... - Take a break. Going on holiday can take you away from the stresses of everyday life and help take your mind off the fact you are failing to fall pregnant. It can be the perfect time to rekindle your relationship and fall in love all over again. - Keep the romance. Many couples fall into the trap of only having sex when they think it might lead to conception. This can become regimented and, frankly, unromantic. Relaxed, healthy intercourse will, hopefully, lead to conception. - Get fit. Exercising releases those all-important endorphins that make you feel happy and take away those stress effects. Yoga is an ideal way to relax, unwind and get in touch with your own body. - Eat healthily. Poor nutrition can contribute to stress so try to eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg, and keep fatty and processed foods to a minimum. - Enjoy sex. It is possible that orgasm during sex increases your chances of getting pregnant as the spasms pull the sperm into the uterus. - Try to remember that it is normal to take a while to conceive and have fun while you are trying.
