Conducting a mole check is inspecting your body for moles that may be irregular or new. In some cases, moles can indicate skin cancer, so it is important. Look for changes in size, color, discharge and height of existing moles and look for new moles. Women should pay attention to their lower legs and back. Men should pay attention to their head, neck and back.

The Head and Neck

Stand in front of the mirror with a comb and a hand mirror. Part the hair on the right, just above the ear, with a comb. Use the mirror to search for moles at the part. Continue doing this with half-inch parts until both the sides and the top of the head are done. Next, lift the hair in the back and part it at half inch intervals from the neck up, checking the parts by facing away from the mirror and using the hand mirror to view the reflection in the large mirror.

Lift your head slightly so the entire front of your neck is visible in the mirror. Check for moles this way on the front and sides of the neck. Face away from the mirror, life your hair up in the back and use the hand mirror to check the back of your neck.

The Upper Body

Check the back and palms of each hand, the inside and outside of each forearm and upper arms. Be sure to lift the arms in front of a mirror to check the back of the upper arm and the armpits. Stand in front of a mirror to check the chest. Look down to check the stomach and sides. You may need a mirror to check the sides of your upper torso. Stand facing away from a wall mirror and use a hand mirror to check the reflection for moles on the back.

Pelvic Region, Buttocks and Legs

Use a hand mirror to view the creases between the thigh and pubic region. Be sure to inspect beneath the penis and scrotum or between the folds of the vagina, in women. Moles can form on this skin. Stand with your back to a mirror and twist your body to view your buttocks in the mirror. Be sure to check between the buttocks as well. Check the back of your legs in the same manner.

Sit with your legs out in front of you. Inspect your thighs, knees and ankles for unusual moles. Check in between toes, as well as the tops and soles of both feet.

The frequency of your mole checks will depend on your skin type, the number of moles you have and your medical history. Discuss the number of home and office mole checks you should have with your doctor. Once a year is the minimum for home checks.
