Life is getting pretty expensive. Whether you’re in your early 20s or you’re in your retirement, the chances are that you have felt the pinch recently, with more and more of us beginning to witness rising food and fuel costs. Those who are on the breadline will no doubt be finding it hard to make ends meet, perhaps turning to their local authorities for assistance or upping their hours at work just to get by. But how do you cope with the rising costs of living? Below, we’ve put together just some of the techniques that you should follow in order to stay afloat. Find cheaper supermarkets Rather than shopping in your favourite supermarket, consider discount retailers for everyday items. You might be surprised at the quality of big discount retailers, who often sell goods that are as good as major supermarkets for up to 50% off. Switching supermarkets can save you thousands of dollars a year depending on what you buy, so make the switch and you’ll have more money in your pocket for other things in life, like eating out or saving for a house. Switch your providers Whether gas, electricity, broadband or insurance, make sure you’re looking for the cheapest deal and use price comparison websites to find discount providers. In today’s age, it does not pay to be loyal to one company - why should you accept a $100 price increase when one of their competitors can offer the same service for $300 less? Be savvy, pit brands against one another, and threaten to leave in hopes they’ll revise their price and offer discounts. Get to grips with your salary It’s surprising just how many people have yet to get to grips with their salary, and understand exactly how much they’re paying out to cover taxes and their retirement. Use an Australian pay calculator to work out how much you’re paying, and check that you’re not eligible for tax reliefs depending on circumstances. Low-income households, students and single parents are all eligible for relief, so speak with your local authority to get the benefits you deserve. Start freelancing If you have a talent and some spare time on evenings or weekends, then consider offering your skills as a freelancer to make some more money. From sites like Fiverr, People Per Hour and Upwork through to finding businesses offline, it’s a great way to supplement your income and add more strings to your bow. Don’t be afraid of reaching out to businesses to ask if they’re in need of your help - it pays to be forward and upfront if you want a result! Move to another country Finally, if you’re struggling to cope with the cost of living in your area, then consider moving out of the city, or even to a new country where prices are cheaper and you can enjoy a higher standard of living. It’s important to be happy and comfortable, and whilst moving away from your hometown may seem daunting, it can help you to lead a more relaxed lifestyle. With higher costs of living and salaries not reflecting that, it can be tough to get by in today’s age, but by following the tips we have mentioned, it’s possible. We wish you the best of luck.
