When you are looking to attract potential web design clients to your business, one of the most valuable tools you have at your disposal for doing this is your portfolio. Yours needs to have great style and a completely unique design (this is what you do for a living, after all), but don’t do this at the detriment of user-friendly navigation and readability.
The process of building your web design portfolio, however, is one that will be continuously ongoing. At least once a year, you should take the time to filter through your material and see whether there’s anything that you can change or add in – get rid of outdated or ugly websites and add in pieces that you are proud of displaying. Remember that, over time, your work will just get better and better, and your portfolio is a great place to show this happening.
Remember that you can use your portfolio to show off your ambition, expertise and personality – not just your work. When clients are looking for a web design company to undertake work on their project, they like to get an idea of the person behind the company. Do some clever things with design that other company’s wouldn’t dream of attempting for fear of failing (showing both your ambition in the industry and your knowledge of it); use colours or images that have a personal meaning, as this can give an insight to who you really are.
Of course, it is also important to keep in mind during the construction of your web design portfolio is that the longer potential clients view your work, the better the chance that they will contact you. But how do you get potential clients to look at your portfolio for as long as possible?
- Make sure that they have a lot to look at, but this doesn’t meant that you should add bad work to make your portfolio bigger. Perhaps add more than one page from each web design to flesh it out a little.
- Utilize a layout that allows potential clients to view all of your projects with little effort on their behalf. For example, have a main page with thumbnails of each web design, each of which links to a page with more information when clicked.
If you are a burgeoning web designer who has worked on little to no projects, creating a great portfolio is going to be a bit of stretch for you to achieve. Once you have gotten a few clients, however, your portfolio is sure to blossom and grow with all sorts of creative work. Just remember to showcase your personality and your expertise and you will be well on the way to using your portfolio to attract even more clients.
