You don’t need to be a parent to know that babies aren’t great at sleeping. However, it is only a parent that truly experiences how exhausting it can be to spend night after night awaking along with your child. The good news, though, is that this doesn’t have to be a continuing trend. rnIn fact, creating an ideal sleep environment can go a long way in ensuring that your little one sleeps a bit better. And, in turn, this means that you get more shut-eye as well. If this is something that you are interested in, here is what you can do:

Keep the Baby in Your Room

rnWhile you can have a designated nursery for your baby, it is best to leave them in your room. For one thing, doing this reduces the risk of SIDs. For another, having your baby in your room means that you can tend to them more quickly. In doing so, you don’t give your baby the chance to get themselves worked up. And, since they are calmer, they will drift off back to sleep much sooner as well. Want to make sure that you can reach your baby even faster? Use baby bassinets for newborns or those who are a couple of months old. This way, you can keep the bassinet closer to your bed. In case your baby doesn’t need to be fed or changed, you simply have to reach over to tend to them.

Make It Dark

rnBabies do tend to sleep better in darker rooms. So, your goal is to try to make the room as dark as possible. If you live in an area where the sun takes a long time to go down or rises rather early, it is a good idea to invest in blackout curtains. This way, you don’t have to worry about the sun keeping your little one awake. Not to mention, you are able to trick your infant’s body into thinking that it is nighttime. Of course, as mentioned, you are going to need to tend to your baby during the night. So, should you turn on the lights, then? No, try to avoid doing this. Instead, rely on nightlights or other dim lights to light the room just a fraction. The less light that you can use, the better. Once again, this prevents your baby from waking up completely.

Adjust the Temperature

rnYou know how you can’t sleep when it’s too hot or too cold? Well, your baby is no different. They may find it difficult to nod off into a blissful sleep when they just can’t seem to get comfortable. So, it is important to ensure that the temperature in your room is set to an appropriate temperature each and every night. For most babies, 68° and 72°F (20° to 22.2°C) is the ideal temperature. This means that you should use a reliable thermostat to monitor the temperature. Then, you won’t have to keep getting up to adjust the temperature. You should also be mindful of how you dress your little one. Use lighter clothing in the summer and warmer wear in the winter. Steer clear of blankets, though, and opt for a sleep sack instead.

Turn Up the Noise a Little

rnMost parents will tiptoe around when their baby is sleeping, trying not to make any noise. However, this may not be the right move. This is because not all babies need to sleep in a silent room – this is especially true for newborns. When you think about it, babies in the womb hear quite a bit. There is the gurgling of your stomach, the whooshing of air in your lungs, and even your voice! Not to mention, they do hear a fair bit of the outside world. As such, they have gotten used to all these sounds. What they may not be as familiar with is deafening silence. So, you should try to figure out what your baby’s best sleeping-to sound is. For some, white noise does the trick, while rain works well for others. Then, there are babies who prefer falling asleep to the vacuum cleaner! In the end, it is all about figuring what works for them and sticking to it. These are all the tips and tricks that you can use to create the perfect sleep environment for your little one. So, if your infant has picked up some rather unfortunate sleeping habits, the proper sleeping room could do the trick!
