How to Deal with Cravings While Dieting

It’s simple psychology. Rid your body of something it likes, and after a while you will find that your body craves it even more than it did before. Cravings are one of the biggest things that rip people away from their diet, and prevents them from losing all the weight they planned on losing. Some of the most popular cravings include chocolate, candy, cake, soft drinks, and fast food. All things that taste so good, but are so bad for your body and diet. Following these few simple rules can help you battle these cravings and keep on track with your diet.
1. Remove Junk Food From Your Home:
Out of sight, out of mind is a key philosophy when beginning your diet. If you do not see or have available access to junk foods within your home, you are less likely to ruin your dieting efforts. Removing all unhealthy food from your home or office will make it more difficult for our brain to think about cheating on your diet and munching on processed snacks. Try to force your family into the same diet as yourself. That way it is easier on you since you do not have to see all the things you crave in your own home, and it does your family a favour and gives them a healthy diet. They’ll hate you for it, but after time, they’ll be thanking you for it.
2. Include Varieties:
Just because you’re on a diet, does not mean you need to cut out the sweet, savory and salty foods altogether. When your diet starts to get boring, it increases cravings. So try and switch up your appetite with different meals, snacks, etc. This will create a more exciting diet plan for you as well as help you avoid boredom in your diet.
3. Portion Control:
Allow yourself to still include some of the foods you enjoyed prior to beginning your diet, just indulge in these foods less often and eat smaller portions. The best way to determine what portion is to eat is using your fist. If you decide to treat yourself to a snack, measure the snack in your fist and don’t indulge in more.
4. Healthy Alternatives:
This is a pretty obvious lesson, but try and substitute unhealthy snacks for healthier snacks. Instead of sitting down and eating a bag of potato chips, switch it for some carrots and dip. Some people crave the salty crunch of potato chips, but there are several products out on the market that are healthy alternatives to these unhealthy snacks we crave. Try flavored rice chips or baked chips as a healthier alternative to deep fried potato chips.
5. Avoid Lack of Sleep:
When you don’t get enough sleep, it throws everything off. Your moods are off, your stress level usually increases, and your appetite is off. Sometimes you won’t be hungry whatsoever, and other times you’ll constantly want to munch. The best way to avoid this is to try and get at least 7 hours of sleep each night.
