One of the worst feelings is to realize that a goal we've set was actually a failed attempt. These setbacks usually result in us feeling psychologically and physically drained. We naturally want to see ourselves succeed, so it can be difficult to comprehend anything less than success.

We tend to be really hard on ourselves and we usually hold ourselves to a very high standard. Because of this, we have a hard time forgetting our mistakes, and as a result, we have a hard time moving on. Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best when he said, "Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in, forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day, you shall begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense." This is probably some of the best advice you could ever have. You always have another day to accomplish your goals, but if you spend all of your time whining about how you can never get anything done...guess what? You will never get anything done and your life will not be as productive as it could be. Instead of selling yourself short, just do what you can, and don't worry about what you can't do.

Ask yourself this question: "Is anyone perfect?" Of course the answer is a resounding, "No!" Everyone has experienced a situation where the result was not what they had projected. Don't worry about what people think or say about your "failures". People usually point out someone else's shortcomings because they are insecure about their own shortcomings.

Just because a setback affects you, this doesn't mean it was your fault. If your car breaks down, your job goes out of business or your house gets robbed, these were likely things that you could not help. You can't personally take responsibility for everything that happens. If you try to do that, you will drive yourself crazy! When things happen ask yourself, "Was there anything I could have done to prevent this?" If the answer is no, then don't worry about it. And if the answer was yes, don't worry about it! When you learn to move on and forget disappointments, you will be happy and feel less stressed out about every situation.

Don't say the f word. I'm not sure which f word you're thinking about, but I'm talking about failure. Try to avoid referring to your setbacks as failure. When we hear the word "fail", something inside of us has a hard time recuperating. Call it a setback, call it a mistake, call it a blunder, but don't call it a failure.

Thomas Edison who had to deal with his own failures when attempting to invent the light bulb said, "Many of life's failures are men who did not realize how close there were to success when they gave up." In many cases giving up because a task is difficult is a worse than actually trying and not succeeding. When you try and fail, you have the satisfaction of knowing that you did your best.
