Green living in today's modern society isn't as difficult as you may think. Green gadgets and eco-friendly products are now just as convenient as traditional products but don't carry the hefty carbon footprint that most disposable and non-biodegradable items carry. The real question isn't whether green living is right for your family or not, but how green you want to become while still living comfortably and protecting the environment for future generations. Starting with small changes and working on reducing your carbon footprint over time is a great start to going green.

What Is Green?

If you aren't sure that going green is right for you, it is time to discover what going green really means to you. Some people may think that you have to switch to all organic foods or trade in your car for a hybrid to go green. The reality is that most families that want to reduce their carbon footprint don't make any drastic changes in their lifestyle. Green living is focused on being a conscious consumer and choosing products that are more eco-friendly. Going green can include choices such as eliminating single serve options for home use and instead buying family sized products served to your family in washable dishes. Something this simple can really make a difference to the environment when you are consistent and committed to the change.

Green living focuses on making choices that are right for your family while also being better for the environment. Some questions to ask yourself may include whether or not you are willing to take the time to opt for reusable items that are washed at home, whether or not you are committed to doing things like reading packaging and watching for more eco-friendly options locally, and whether or not your family is willing to make these changes with you. When you make environmentally conscious choices as a consumer you can have a positive impact globally.

Challenges and Benefits

Going green has both challenges and benefits. The monetary investment that comes with buying green appliances can seem a little expensive, but the result is lowered energy costs over the lifetime of the appliance. You may find that using a savings calculator beneficial to deciding which appliances are the best investment for your personal needs. You can find energy calculators online at the U.S. Small Business Administration website, found online at http://www.sba.gov/content/energy-saving-calculators-energy-star. Another challenge is learning what to look for to green your life. Post-consumer waste in packaging, reusable versus disposable, and biodegradable are all things you will need to become familiar with if you plan on becoming as green as possible.

There are also many positive aspects to becoming more environmentally friendly. Switching to cloth diapers, for instance, can save tons of waste from landfills and will save the average family about $2,000 from birth to potty training. The money savings are a big benefit when considering whether going green is right for your family. You can also save on the amount of garbage that goes into the landfill and reduce your carbon footprint for a healthier, greener Earth.

First Steps

Green living doesn't have to require major sacrifices. In fact, some of the changes that you will make to become more environmentally friendly are changes that you won't really notice aside from a reduced energy bill each month. For example, upgrading to Energy Star rated heating and cooling systems or replacing an old refrigerator with an Energy Star rated model can save you a minimum of eighty-five dollars a year according to EnergyStar.gov. Major appliances built before 1993 aren't manufactured according to Energy Star standards and should be replaced for maximum energy savings.

You can also make small changes in the products that you purchase. Small changes like switching to reusable lunch sacks rather than using brown bags are easy to make and are also more environmentally conscious. There are now reusable sandwich bags and other reusable options that keep waste out of the landfill while also reducing your annual household budget significantly. Each small change that you make will add up in a big way when you begin working on becoming more eco-friendly.
