Among so many options, you may get confused about which one you should choose and which one you should not choose. For making the right choice, you need to consider a couple of aspects, such as angle, length, etc. In this article, we will discuss these vital aspects that will help you identify and buy the right ramp for your home.

1. Angle

Disability Discrimination Act or DDA suggested that slope for public access and walking should be 1:12 or 4.8 degrees. There are certain cases where a steeper slope is fine for residential purposes. You need to ensure that your ratio is comfortable and you don’t need to have too steep of a slope for walking or for your mobility device. It would be better to have a ramp of three feet wide. The angle can vary depending on an individual’s requirements.

2. Length

In order to determine the length, you need to consider the space you have and how much real estate you have for installing the ramp. The length of your ramp will depend on the angle of your ramp. If your space is limited, you will have a steeper angle to your ramp. For this, you should determine what angle you will want before deciding on the length. Once you know which angle you will need, you should look at the height of the top of where you will want your ramps for home use to be. From there, some math will help you calculate the exact requirement. DDA has recommended a 1:12 slope ratio per inch of rising. Hence, if you want the top of your ramp a foot higher from the ground, it would be 12 inches and need a ramp of 12 feet. It can be altered up to a 1:16 ratio if there is an issue regarding space and you are finding that angle comfortable.

3. Material

What material do you think will be the best fit for your requirements? The two main options will be wood and metal. Earlier, ramps were made of wood. Eventually, aluminum came into the scene and due to its convenience and affordability. Aluminum is weather-resistant. Therefore, it is able to withstand any weather conditions.

Considering these aspects is important for making the right choice of residential access ramps. Think well before investing in the ramps.
