Who is your Ideal Client? Who do you want to work with? You didn't launch your business to be a slave to the masses. You did it to preserve your choice. But, time and again I see entrepreneurs trying to serve everyone. Big mistake. You can't do it, nor do you want to. I hear the resistance roaring in your head: But if I choose, then I exclude! Cue the freak-out. Listen, you WANT to exclude. Not only is it okay to select your clients, it's crucial to the success of your business. How likely do you think it is for a fine artist to best serve the electrical engineer contingent? Not likely. Not likely at all. Luckily for you, identifying and attracting your ideal client is not difficult. In fact, it's as easy as looking at yourself, where you've been and where you're going. Let's say that again: Clarifying and attracting your ideal client is as simple as looking at your own path and emphatically representing who you are and who you're becoming.Step One: Before you can attract, you must identify. Otherwise you'll be greeted by all kinds of clients you don't want to work with. Every dollar is NOT created equal. That said, you must become super clear on who you want to work with. It's very likely the people you'll best serve are either a few steps behind you on their path, or they're at a similar point in their evolution but hate to do what you love to do. (I'm talking work here, not recreation.) Because your values, interests, senses of humor, and ways of meandering through the world will often be very similar. How about a little exercise to get you started? Bring out the pen and paper; you're about to get specific. Answer the following questions:
  • What are your top 5 values?
  • What are your ideal clients' top values?
  • Do you want to work with people who are just starting or do you want more seasoned clients?
  • What are three characteristics that define your Ideal Client?
  • What are the daily aggravations or stressors that they most want to get rid of?
  • What do they desire most?
That's just a start. Now, for you eager entrepreneurs, make a list of at least 100 qualities, characteristics, values, likes, dislikes, loves, and fears of the people you ideally WANT to serve. Because remember, you choose who you work with.Step Two: Now that you've gotten hyper-specific about who you want to work with, let's get down to attracting them. This is the fun part! Your job is to express the highest version of yourself that your clients want to be. Simply said, you just get to be you. Attracting your ideal client is not only transformative for them, but for you as well. When you poise yourself to represent the vision of who you want to be, you become it. From there, you can be of the best assistance to those you choose to serve. So how do we do this? To start, take a look at the list you just made of your client's fears and desires. Then, soothe the worry, present solutions, and imbue confidence in them that their desires are attainable. That's a big one. Build their confidence. By embodying what they desire, you’re showing them it's possible. People love a tangible example, and you can be theirs. Most importantly, have fun with it all. Your ideal clients are waiting for you. Continue to put your energy out there and trust that it will come back. It always does. Want some help and coaching with this?
