Nothing is more important to your child’s future than his or her education. Although no two second graders are alike, there are certain developmental standards that are included in all second grade curriculums. Math is one of the most important subjects, as it works on the basic concepts of adding, subtracting, identifying numbers, counting and recognizing number sequences and patterns. In order for your child to grasp other concepts down the line, the fundamental building blocks start in the early years. Second graders aren’t just focusing on textbook math problems, but also becoming proficient learners that understand how to arrive at solutions for everyday problems. Second grade is the time that students are offered basic word problems that encourage the use of math concepts. As adults, we know that not everyone is good at solving these types of problems or thinking outside the box when the problems are consistently shown in one application. If your child is struggling with these concepts, repeated failures can result in your child feeling inadequate and insecure. If your child starts to feel this way in second grade, he or she may very well continue this throughout the years. Your child may also generalize that he or she is not good in math and not have the confidence to excel with other areas of the subject such as by recognizing patterns, identifying shapes and adding multi-digit numbers. It’s important that as parents and educators, we prevent this from happening by offering the right learning aids that will help all kids achieve success in 2nd grade math. The most effective way to help your second grader is to be familiar with what concepts are being taught in school so you can expand on the material at home. With online school newsletters, it has never been easier to keep track of the curriculum. By knowing what lessons are being taught, you can help your child develop the skills at home and ease him or her through the lesson. Teachers must also do their part by sharing lesson plans and keeping parents abreast of what concepts are being taught. One of the difficulties that teachers have faced is that children learn in very different ways. Teaching a particular 2nd grade math topic may leave half the classroom understanding the material, while the other half does not. In past years, teachers would move on to the following lesson in order to meet the goals of the curriculum. The result: The snowball effect where the information would pile up without some students ever fully grasping the material. Once a child becomes lost in the curriculum, it’s difficult to catch up and rebuild confidence. To fill in the gaps, many curriculums are integrating adaptive learning techniques and encouraging parents to do the same at home. Adaptive learning is advantageous for parents, teachers and students, which is why it’s worth the investment. Taking place on the computer, these fun and interactive games are built around each individual student. They allow struggling kids to practice 2nd grade math material in a rewarding environment, while advanced students can further challenge themselves by delving into third grade material. Investing in an adaptive learning program is the perfect way to build on the concepts at home, while still playing an active role in your child’s academic success. You can keep track of the progress being made and ensure that the material being leaned in school is consistent with what is being practiced at home. Most importantly, busy parents and teachers can offer valuable educational resources without having to be present each step of the way.
