With the economy in its current state, it has become difficult for people to find work, no matter what profession you are. In a competitive field like nursing, it is especially complicated, because so many are applying for the same position. So, how can you make yourself stand out against your competition? You can’t expect to simply walk into a hospital wearing your nursing scrubs, and be handed a job right on the spot. So how can you find a job in nursing? The first place you should start is the job boards. Sure, it might help to go to hospitals and ask if they are hiring, then hand in an application that they can hold on to for a while, but that takes a lot of time and energy. The internet can be just as effective, and be much more efficient, from a time management standpoint. There are many boards that post jobs specifically catered to your profession. In this case, nursingjobs.org would be a good place to begin. You simply select your specialty and the location in which you would like to work, and it performs a search of potential matches within a certain radius of that location. Healthcareerweb.com is another board, which specializes in finding employment for anyone in the medical field, rather than just nurses. However, it does give you the ability to narrow down your search by occupation, so it is also a very useful tool. There are many posting sites such as these that allow a person to search their area for jobs. But what if you want to make yourself stand out a little more, in addition to simply clicking “apply” and emailing a resume? Now it’s time to put those networking skills to use. Call everyone you know in the medical field, because someone always knows someone who can help you out or connect you with someone else. If you don’t know anyone in the medical field, it might be useful to try social networking. For those of us in the business field, LinkedIn can be very helpful in connecting with people and building our network of trusted contacts. For nurses, however, NurseNetworking.org can be that medium. This is one social networking site that is catered to nurses and people in the health and medical field. There are many of sites like this one out there, you just have to know where to look. But stick to it, and if you are persistent and determined enough, you’ll be walking through your hospital wearing nursing uniforms before you know it!
