When most people think of entrepreneurship, only a very few have spirituality in mind. On the base level, business is about dollars and sense first and foremost. However, more and more people are trying to inject some spirituality or higher purpose into their business. Business owners often feel the urge to do more so they can have a sense of fulfillment and truly make a difference in the world. Injecting higher meaning into a business is something anybody can do. In this article, we’re going to show you how anybody can make their businesses more meaningful. 1. Define Your Company’s Purpose The first step when trying to make a more major impact is defining your why. The first thing you should do is define what the ultimate goal of your business is beyond profit. What change are you trying to instill in your customers? Once you find that purpose, make sure that you keep it close to heart and talk about it often. The stronger the emotional connection to your goal is, the bigger impact it will have on your business’s decisions. Make sure that everyone in your business knows exactly what this mission is so that it will have a direct influence on their day to day actions and decisions. 2. Make a “Heartbreak” List This is one of the most efficient exercises you can do with your team if you aren’t sure about which direction you should be talking. Take a look around. What problems do your client encounter or what problems do your community struggle with? Better yet, what is the most pressing issue you see in the world at large? Make a clear list of issues, problems and injustices. If one cause pulls on your heartstring more than another, then you should move in that direction. This is what GurbakshChahal, founder of ClickAgents and BlueLithium, did in 2014 when he founded the Chahal Foundation. The foundation, which was originally named “Be Proud” was created right after the tragic Wisconsin Sikh Temple shooting. Chahal, whose parents were Sikh themselves, decided to found the foundation to help raise awareness about religious diversity and acceptance. 3. Take Action This is the most crucial part. Taking action can start small, you don’t have to instantly found a non profit organization or start writing huge checks. But whatever step you take, make sure you take it now. For instance, you could offer your services to an organization near you that is aligned with your beliefs and core cause. Or you could start a marketing campaign revolving around your new cause. Offer free merchandise or run a scholarship program to a community you feel wouldn’t have access to your products or services. You don’t have to work with any organization long term at first.Understand the key players and gauge your level of commitment before it becomes a strain on your operation. You could also make a change to your policies to affect your community at large. Make it a point to employ people from your local community. Participate in local restoration programs and workshops. Donate a portion of your profits to a non profit, which will have a direct impact on your local community, and try to identify the most pressing needs so you can make the most significant impact. Conclusion Adding a sense of meaning to any business will boost your and your employees’ morale. If you want to make an impact, start now with a clear mission statement. See which issues affect you and your community the most. And most importantly, take action now, no matter how small that action is.
