Because a lot of people have identified scrap in Australia as a pretty lucrative way to make some extra cash, many of the places where you could once source scrap have now made it near impossible to get any sort of metal for free (at least, legally). Whether you are looking for scrap aluminium, copper, brass or some other valuable metal, these are some of the best ways that you can source it for free in Australia:

  • Your Home
One of the easiest ways to source scrap in Australia is to keep a stash of all the metal that comes through your home, such as old aluminium drink cans or tins. As a side tip, if you crush them, they become much easier to store. By collecting all of the scrap that would otherwise be thrown out in your house, you may find yourself with a pretty good haul after only a few months.

  • Construction Sites
When contractors, electricians and plumbers are finished working on a building site, they will often leave behind a bunch of scrap in Australia that they have no use for (such as wiring and copper tubing). You will need to ask permission from the site foreman before entering a location that has any sort of construction occurring, however.

  • Gun range
If you live or work near a gun range, it can be a good idea to pay the area a visit towards dusk (when everyone is packing up and leaving for the day) to pick up all the discarded brass casings. If there are people still left at the range, try not to get in their way whilst you collect the scrap.

  • Advertisements
Place an ad on a website like Gumtree or in your local newspaper offering free removal of scrap in Australia. Those people who haven’t actually realized that their old scrap is worth anything or who simply don’t have the means or the time to get rid of it themselves will be glad of your assistance. You could even charge a small fee and make some extra profit.

  • Road Side
Whilst your driving around running your daily errands, you should keep an eye on the side of the road, as this is where a lot of people dump scrap in Australia (and where a lot of old car parts tend to gather when they fall off). You should also take a look through hard rubbish collections for valuable scrap in Australia.

As you can see, there are still a number of places from which you can source free scrap in Australia – you just have to know where to look. Remember that it is always best to ask for permission before taking scrap in Australia, and you may find yourself with a pretty decent haul that brings in a considerable amount of money.
