Since poor oral hygiene is generally the main reason behind this condition, there are some effective home remedies for gum disease which can be tried out to prevent the escalation of the problem. If gum disease is not treated in time, it can lead to serious dental problems and other health complications.

Neem

    To heal your gums, you can either use a few Neem leaves in a mouthwash, or brush your teeth with toothpaste which contains Neem, or use a Neem gel. Regular use of Neem can bring about a notable improvement in your dental health.

Oil pulling

  • Ayurvedic experts consider oil pulling to be a very effective oral-care technique which eliminates plaque, removes toxins, and makes the teeth and gums stronger.
  • This technique involves the use of sesame oil or coconut oil for rinsing the mouth thoroughly. Swish a tablespoon of the oil in your mouth for about 15 minutes and spit it out. Then rinse your mouth with plain water. Oil pulling should be done once a day for about a month to cure gum problems; but, remember that you should not swallow the oil.

Tea bags

  • One of the other common home remedies for gum disease is the use of tea bags, especially black tea. The presence of tannic acid and antioxidants in tea bags can provide relief from gum pain and inflammation, and can also fight gum infections.
  • For this remedy, steep a tea bag in hot water for around 5 minutes; and when it cools, hold it on the problematic gum area for a few minutes. You can repeat this remedy a few times a day till the pain subsides.

Honey:

  • You can also try using honey for treating your gum disease. Honey contains a substance known as propolis, from which honey gets natural antiseptic and antibacterial properties.
  • To treat gum infections, a small amount of honey can be rubbed on the affected area of the gums after brushing the teeth. However, honey should be applied only on the gums and not on the teeth because it has a high sugar content.

Lemon

  • The use of lemon is also one of the proven home remedies for gum disease. Lemon can treat gum infections because it has anti-inflammatory properties, and is abundant in vitami C.
  • For this home remedy, the juice of one lemon should be mixed well with some salt to form a paste. The paste should be applied to the teeth for a few minutes, and rinsed off with a warm water gargle.

Hydrogen peroxide and Baking soda paste

  • You can use a paste of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda for treating gum problems. Hydrogen peroxide can kill germs and fight gum infections as it works as a strong antibacterial agent, while baking soda can prevent tooth decay.
  • To make this paste, add hydrogen peroxide in one teaspoon of baking soda bit by bit, till a paste is formed. Use this paste on your gums and gum line with the help of a soft toothbrush and gently brush your teeth with it. Then spit out the paste and rinse your mouth.

Foods rich in Vitamin C

  • One of the best home remedies for gum disease is to consume fruits and vegetables which have plentiful Vitamin C, like oranges, kiwi, mango, grapes, guava, papaya, strawberry, and bell peppers.
  • Vitamin C is a noteworthy antioxidant which can help fight gum problems by promoting bone regeneration and growth of connective tissue. Furthermore, foods rich in Vitamin C also prevent plaque build-up in the mouth.
