How To Grow Miniature Bamboo

The popularity of miniature bamboo is on the rise given it's qualities to enhance either an outdoor garden setting or as an indoor plant.

The miniature bamboo plant, known as Pogonatherum is part of the Poaceae family and is very popular in South East Asia. However, this doesn't mean you cannot enjoy it's many qualities in your own backyard provided you follow some simple guidelines.

The miniature bamboo has a distinct liking for full sun and is prone to plenty of moisture. It is also very hardy and with the proper maintenance, could survive in much colder climates.

It grows to a height of around 1-2 feet and portrays a leafy image. This is part of it's attractiveness for people in western countries and for decorative purposes, it won't let you down.

Miniature bamboo loves moist ground. It's excellent along the edges of backyard ponds where it has a regular supply of moist conditions. It makes for a great border addition.

It's also popular as an indoor plant and will adapt to it's surroundings. This means partial light conditions shouldn't be a problem provided it has a constant supply of water.

Maintenance Requirements Of Miniature Bamboo

If you intend featuring it in an outside garden then as we mentioned, water is important to keep the plant happy. It will reward you quite nicely if it has access to a sunny position but can also adapt to filtered light conditions.

It's a good idea to fertilize at regular intervals. Certainly fertilizing at the start of the warm season makes good sense but keep an eye on the plant as further applications during this time may be required.

Pruning back the miniature bamboo's foliage will encourage a dense growth and if you intend for the plant to act as a border, then pruning is recommended to get this effect.

Regular leaf trimming is desirable for indoor miniature bamboo. Don't be concerned too much if the leaves begin to dry. Prune back the plant to 4-6 inches to encourage rejuvenation.
