How To Improve Communication Skills Of Your Child

“My child often gets dishearten after returning from the school. He always complains me that his friends and peers don’t talk to him much and also tease him because he cannot express his feelings. It seems that my child lack the self-confidence and suffers because of poor communication skills”.

To develop a good communication skill is a great asset that stays with us throughout our lives. Communication is the art of expressing the inner feelings and at the same time convincing others to listen to you. The English word ‘communication’ is derived from Latin term ‘Communis' which means ‘to make common, to transmit, to impart'. In Communication, feedback plays a vital role. This is one such component that provides the fuel to the process of communication. For Example, when teachers deliver lectures during their classes, they get feedback in form of children nodding their heads or asking questions.

If teachers don’t get a feedback, they also become reluctant to give lectures. The process of communication can generally be divided into two broad categories- (a) Verbal and (b) Non-verbal. Verbal communication included intrapersonal, interpersonal and group communication; where as non-verbal communication is one where we communicate through our body gestures. A nodding of the head or asking someone to come by waving the hands is examples of non-verbal communication. A Sound communication skill is the core essence of a sound career.

We start communicating as we take birth. A baby cries when it feels hungry or get scared or something. The baby’s cry is an indication to the caretaker that the baby is in some kind of trouble. It is very important in the recipe of life. There are various factors that facilitate the development of communicative skills. One who has fluency in a particular language need not necessarily be a good communicator.

Language does play a vital role in this process, but there are various other things that must be considered while teaching communication skills to our children. The environment in which a child develops has great impact on the development of different skills in children. The factors on which the advancement of communication skills depend are

1. To be a good communicator, one needs to be a good listener first. We should teach our children first to listen to others and accordingly put their arguments

2. Observation is another most important thing in this process. By observing how others behave, we come to know the thought process of others. This is very crucial while we communicate with people

3. Body language is also vital and thus knowing correct body language is also very significant. Standing straight or sitting gently during any conversation is one factor that contributes to the success of the process

4. While speaking, the voice modulation factor should be taken care of. Speaking harshly or putting the points in a rough manner may mess us everything. Children need to be taught in an early age as how to speak to people belonging to different age groups

5. To make a process of communication effective, a proper dress code should be followed. This is the reason why in corporate, we use formal wears during office hours.

Though there are several tips to enhance the communication skills of your child, but above all confidence factor matters the most. It is the foremost duty of us to make our kid believe in themselves.
