In this era, suffering and pain are prevalent throughout the world unfortunately. Famines, natural disasters, impending environmental doom, global diseases and wars rage across our planet. Every time we look at the news, there is an endless amount of suffering, pain and misery. rnThe key to being able to live happily against this endless turmoil is to understand the underlying source of this doom and suffering. All living beings undergo an endless cycle of birth and rebirth. This perpetual cycle of reincarnation reaps temporary happiness and sadness continuously. Thus, everything in this world that occurs is a consequence of the natural laws of justice. Our current lives are a direct result of our karmas from our previous life. Positive karma occurs when we have performed good deeds in our previous life and negative karma occurs when we have harmed or bode ill to other living beings in our previous life. Therefore, do not judge or be dismayed by all the suffering and pain on this earth. They are the consequences of the actions of countless lifetimes. This does not mean that you should condone the suffering but instead accept it as a law of nature. The outcomes are a direct and just consequence of the balancing karmas of our world. However, your intent should always remain not to cause harm to any living being by thought, speech or actions. Fundamentally, you should recognize that the sole purpose to your existence is to serve others in any way you can. Thus, instead of thinking that you cannot be happy due to all the suffering in this world, why not change your perception and ask instead: what can I do to alleviate the suffering in this world? Everyone can help in one way or another, all one needs to do is to have the will and the inner intent. rnAs Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan, stated: “Our purpose should be to use whatever skill or knowledge we know for the intent of serving others.” Thus, in your day-to-day life try to make a difference to experience happiness in numerous small ways. For example: •Smiling and being kind to othersrn•Donating or volunteering to a charityrn•Stop by to help – with shopping, crossing the road etc. •Giving food to the needy •Helping your neighbors – especially if they are alone or elderly. By helping others, no matter how big or small, you will feel happy but importantly you would have made difference to someone. Remember: the only way to be happy is to make someone else happy.
