For the past 45 days or more, most of the country has been stuck at home trying to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Life as you once knew it has drastically changed. The kids are home from school, many adults are working from home or unemployed, and activities ranging from leisure shopping to travel have been limited or prohibited until things are back under control. Needless to say, it’s been hard for everyone to adjust.
Though it can be natural (and necessary) to focus your attention on things like improving your physical health to reduce your risks of contracting the virus and allocating the necessary funds to support your loved ones, many overlook the importance of caring for your mental health. This type of nationwide health crisis can place an undue amount of pressure on you emotionally. If you’re not careful, it could increase your risk of developing mental illnesses including chronic stress, anxiety, or depression.
If maintaining your sanity during these uncertain times has proven challenging, there are things you can do to lift your spirits and persevere. Here is some advice provided below:
Accept What Can’t be Controlled
You’ll waste a lot of time and mental energy trying to control things that are literally impossible to manage. As unfortunate as it is, you cannot control the fact that you’ve been laid off from your job, schools are closed, and daily activities are limited to what you can do safely at home. Though you’re anxious to get back to normal, what must be understood is that at this point in time, it’s impossible. So, preserve this mental energy by focusing on things that are within your control.
Create New Routines
In the beginning, it may have been a blessing in disguise to be able to take time off from work and just chill at home. However, after a few weeks, this excess time on your hands can leave you feeling bored, unproductive, and helpless. Not to mention, an unstructured household is bound to lead to chaos.
To improve your mental wellness during the lockdown, it is highly recommended that you create new routines for you and your loved ones. A routine gives you something to focus on, helps to pass the time, and keeps a disorderly home under wraps. Though your entire day doesn’t have to be planned out minute by minute, having a morning, afternoon, and bedtime routine works wonders.
Accomplish Some Goals
A great way to boost your spirits during a lockdown is to set and accomplish personal goals. Not only does it help to occupy your time, but it gives you something to look forward to and something to feel good about despite current times. Sit and think about some things you’ve always wanted to accomplish. Maybe you want to lose weight, complete some home improvement projects, develop a closer relationship with your loved ones, or learn a new hobby or skill. Then, write down simple steps that you can complete on a daily basis to get you closer to those goals. Lastly, record your progress and celebrate your victories.
Find Ways to Relax
Yes, there’s a lot going on right now. Many adults have to adjust to working from home while also caring for their kids around the clock without the assistance of schools or other relatives. Though days during the lockdown can seem overwhelming, it is imperative to find ways to relax. You can wake up 30 minutes to an hour early and meditate, practice yoga, or read a book. Spend time before bed winding down with a nice bath, spending quality time with your significant other, or watching a television show or movie that makes you smile.
Know When to Get Help
Sure, there are going to be times during the lockdown where you feel stressed out and overwhelmed. With changes like this, it’s only natural. However, prolonged periods of stress and anxiety can cause significant problems for you physically and emotionally. If you start to notice common signs of mental illness or simply feel on edge at all times despite your best efforts to stay calm, perhaps you should speak with someone.
