When people think about government employees they think about greed and corruption. However, that is not the case for everyone and caving to the stereotypical greed and corruption standards is not the best way to get ahead or make a difference in a government career. In fact the best ways to get ahead and make a difference in your government career is go back to the basics. 1. Volunteer To get in to many government jobs many people start out by first volunteering their time. Even though you may already have a career working for a politician or other government agency it is still good to volunteer from time to time. You might still be getting paid for your work, but offer to do more work when you can. This is a great way to leave your footprint and make a difference in the government you are working for. 2. Get Educated Consider getting a master’s in public administration. A solid master's degree program will give you a wider understanding of how our government works. It will also better qualify you to run for a government office yourself someday. 3. Utilize Social Media Social media is a great way of interacting with other people, but it can also be used for promoting the politician or government agency that you work for. This can help create how the public views you and your employers. The more favorable public eye you have the easier your job will be. However, be careful not to embarrass yourself on social media either as it can ultimately make or break your career. 4. Donate You will want to be careful not to violate any ethics rules when it comes to donating. For instance if you are working for a politician already, you can’t donate your own money to the person you work for and in some instances you can’t donate at all to other public campaigns. Usually the best way to donate, is to donate your time. Working extra is almost always welcome in the world of government. If you are looking to donate monetary funds to a cause or a nonprofit, be sure you know that you are not doing anything unethical or illegal or it may cost you and others around you’re their jobs. 5. Current Events If you are going to have a successful career and make a difference in government then one of the most important thing you can do is stay updated on all of the current events and major issues. You will also want to have a basic grasp of history. In other words, the more knowledge you have the more value you bring to the table in your government job. In government jobs more often times than not, knowledge is power and it will help elevate your job performance. Government in of itself is not meant to be a bad thing. It tends to be the people who work in that corrupt it and skew it for their own personal gain. If you are pursuing a government career keep the advice listed above in mind.
