How to Make Sure Your Jute Rugs Last Long Enough?

As more and more people turn eco-friendly, they are opting for rugs made from a variety of natural material like cotton and jute. Jute is as versatile as cotton and is grown in almost equal quantities. Being vegetable fiber jute can be woven into long threads that are coarse to the touch. Jute is used to manufacture a variety of products, the most popular one being rugs. These are environmental friendly, very soft and extremely durable. As jute is a natural fiber you need to take special care for rugs made from this material.

1. Vacuum the rug on a regular basis, at least two times in a week. If the dirt is kept from accumulating in the fibers the lifespan of the rug can be extended. Accumulated dirt and stain may be difficult to clean later.

2. Preferably use jute rugs in places where spills and wetting is less. Spills and water can cause the jute to form dark stains and spots that would be impossible to remove later

3. If any liquid gets spilled on the rug spot clean it immediately. First blot out the excess liquid with a dry cloth. Never rub the area as the stain may spread. If too much of liquid has been spilled turn the rug and blot out the liquid from the backside too. Removing moisture is very important. If the liquid is something that could leave a stain like coffee or juices you may need to blot and clean the stain with a special mixture. Mix equal quantities of vinegar and warm water. After blotting out the excess liquid take a clean cloth, dip it in the mixture and squeeze out the water. Do not allow water to drip on the other areas. Press this cloth on the stained area till the stain is removed, keep dipping and squeezing as necessary. Finally use a dry cloth to blot any moisture from that area. Repeat the process till the stain is completely removed.

4. If the rug has accumulated any dried debris remove it with the blunt edge of a spoon or spatula

Keep changing the position of the rug so that only one side is not exposed to traffic. This will make sure the rug ages on all corners equally.

Never use hot water. It causes shrinking of the jute rug. Never steam clean the jute rug, you will destroy it.

There are jute rug protectors available in the market that can be sprayed or applied on the rug. The protector resists liquids and repels water and so when a spill occur chances of staining can be reduced considerably.

A major problem you may face with jute rugs is growth of mould and mildew. Being a natural fiber these are inherently absorbent and natural elements like humidity levels create a potentially good environment for mould and mildew growth. Airing the rug and vacuuming it often could help you minimize this trouble. If the climate is too humid, jute rugs may not be ideal for your home.
