Considering the economic condition today, keeping a job can be a real struggle. You really need to be outstanding otherwise your chance of being laid off is high. It is like the survival of the fittest, as they say. If you do not shine and perform significantly better than others, you can possibly lose your job. rnHowever, the fate of your career largely depends on your employer. It has been said that people hire and keep who they want. And one way to make your big boss want to keep you is to make him see and realize that you are a huge loss to his company. Below are the things you must do. rn1. Consistently go to work on time. Employers and bosses know the value of time. They believe that “time is gold” and that “early bird catches the worm.” If they are always prompt at work that means they would want all their employers to be the same. If you are late most of the time, you are sending negative messages to your boss. Unpunctuality may imply that you do not value your job that much, you are lazy, bad at time management, and you lack self-control and good work ethics. rn2. Show your boss the value in the work you do. If your boss sees you an important worker and that losing you would mean a struggle for the company, then he will think twice before deciding on letting you go. Show that the company needs you and your services. Do not be an ordinary employee, be extraordinary. Even if you do not hold a high position in your company, you can still show that you are an indispensable worker. 3. Deliver more than what you’re asked or expected to do. In business, delivering more than what clients and customers expect is a rule of thumb. Apply this principle in your work, as well. Do not just do well in your work, but better. As long as it’s appropriate and timely, do more than what your job description states. Go the extra mile. If you are given a deadline, try accomplishing it a day or two earlier. Be willing to work overtime if necessary and if asked. Do not just make clients satisfied, make them happy and satisfied. Do not just do your job, do it with passion, willingness, and enthusiasm. 4. Be proactive. Employers keep those who contribute great things for their companies. Don’t just sit there and wait for instructions or receive lectures. Sometimes you need to speak up, observe the things that need to be improved and think of and suggest some ways to make them better. Even if you are not a manager, you still have a voice, skills, and capacities to instigate changes. Make use of them. Do not just react and adapt to change, learn how to initiate good changes whenever necessary, appropriate, and timely. If an employer is left to choose between a proactive and a reactive employee, his choice would be very obvious. rn5. Make the most out of your working hours. Be productive. Make sure you finish all your tasks for the day without jeopardizing quality. Deliver remarkable outputs at all times. Avoid too much socializing during office hours either in the work place or online. Avoid taking too long lunches or breaks. Do not waste your time at work. Employers know that wasted time is wasted money. They surely would want to see their employees working hard while producing great results.
