If you have decided to become an entrepreneur, it may be that you are the sole proprietor of your business, and that you have no employees, at least at first. There is probably going to come a time when you do need to hire people, and it takes a little bit of work to find the right employees for every job. Then, once you do find them, and they turn out to be really great employees, you must take steps to ensure that you retain them as employees. If you have a rapid turnover of employees, there is something that you are not doing right, and you are wasting a lot of time and money. Integrated Talent Systems, an international talent consulting firm, states that the hiring new employees can be outrageously expensive. It's not just that you have to find the right person. You have to spend time and money training that person, and to lose that person a few months down the road can cost thousands of dollars. Here are some things you can do to insure that your employees enjoy working for you, and will be loyal employees for many years to come: Don't treat them like employees: After a while, you really get to know your employees, and you feel a bit of a kinship with them. Make sure that they know this. Treat them just like they were part of your own family. If you treat your employees poorly, one of two things is going to happen: either they will not perform to your satisfaction, or they will just simply quit. When you create a bond with your employees, you will have people who want to help you succeed, and will work hard to insure that it happens. Keep on doing things to motivate your employees: No matter how great an employee is or how hard to work, everyone loses their motivation once in a while and needs a little bit of a kick start. For example, be consistent about giving your employees raises. If they feel they are not making enough money, they will often not work their hardest or their best. When you reward them with salary increases and bonuses, you will be showing them that you appreciate all of the work they do for you, which will give them the incentive to work even harder. There are all kinds of little things you can do for your employees to show how much you appreciate them. Throw them a party. Offer prizes as incentives for certain jobs. Even something as simple as providing your employees with free coffee will show them that you care about their needs. Happy employees means productive employees, and productive employees mean profits for your business. Improve the working atmosphere: If people do not enjoy the atmosphere in which they work, they will often be less productive than they could be. This doesn't just mean making the place look pretty. For instance, if you have employees who have to commute long distances to and from work, offer a shuttle service for them. Make it easy for them to get transfers to different branches of your business, and make sure that there are always opportunities for people to move up within the company. Things like this will really work to improve the atmosphere, because you are going to have employees who are happy and content in their jobs, and you won't have to worry about losing them to the competition. Finally and this is the most important one of all, Recognize and personally acknowledge your employees for jobs well done. This will ensure that you get the best out of your employees every time.
