You may be suffering from split ends for any number of reasons. Maybe your hair got exposed to too much heat, or you snagged it with a poor-quality hairstyling implement. Or, perhaps you didn't maintain it well enough, or you used styling products that weren't right for your hair type, or the techniques you used to detangle your hair were poor.

Whatever happened, if you keep finding split ends, there are three things you can do about it. You can trim them off, conceal them, or use one of the following methods to temporarily repair them.

1. The Disguise Method

Did you discover your split ends at a moment when you didn't have enough time to do anything about them?

One thing you can do right now is simply hide them under a hair wrap or a hat.

You'll still look great, and no one will be able to tell. If you don't usually wear hair wraps or hats, just put your hair in a style that helps to conceal them, such as putting it up in a bun, or braid it.

2. Use A Moisturizer-Rich Shampoo As A Temporary Solution

If you use a shampoo with lots of powerful moisturizers in it, it will temporarily stick your split ends back together. However, this effect will only last for a day or two, at most.

3. Add A Moisturizing Conditioner

This solution fixes split ends on the same temporary basis as moisturizing shampoos. When you apply conditioner, concentrate on the ends of your hair. Work the conditioner gently into the tips of your hair, pinching the ends so that your split ends will stick together again.

4. The Flat-Iron Method

A flat iron may be used to temporarily re-merge your split ends. However, before you try this, you should use a heat-protecting serum on your hair to prevent the heat from damaging it further. After applying it, go over the last two inches of your hair with the flat iron.

5. Just Snip It!

Cutting split ends off is the only way to get rid of them permanently. Be sure to use good-quality, sharp scissors, and don't cut carelessly.

Before you trim, take a section of your hair between your fingers and take a close look at it to find the section that is damaged. This isn't hard, because the damaged area will have a lighter color to it than the surrounding hair, and will be drier and more brittle. Once you've found where the damage is, trim off that section.

Afterward, safeguard the rest of your hair against further damage with a deep-conditioning hair treatment.
