How to Move Your Vehicle Overseas

When you decide to move to another country, there are a great many details you must think about if you want the move to be successful. You need to select a moving company, decide if you are going to pack your belongings or if you are going to hire a professional, verify the moving company in the new country that is going to cooperate with your movers to make sure your belongings arrive safely and arrange for items that are not going with you to be stored.

One of those items you need to consider is your vehicle. Sometimes, you have the option of moving it with you to your new home, but in other cases, you have to keep it in the United States. So, before you decide whether or not you are going to ship your car to your new location, you need to consider the following points:

• Most importantly, does the new country allow the importation of vehicles? If it does not, you do not have to read any further. You will either need to sell your car or arrange to have it stored while you are gone if you intend to return to the United States at some point in the future.

• Are there specific safety or environmental regulations related to automobiles in the new country? If there are, you will have to ensure that your automobile complies with those regulations before you ship it.

• What will insurance cost? It could be extremely expensive to insure your automobile in the new country. In fact, it might not be worth shipping it if you are not going to use it very often, since why insure something you are not using?

• How much will repairs and modifications cost? Again, the expense might not be worth the hassle if you don’t intend to use your vehicle very often.

• Will the type of fuel your vehicle requires be readily available in the new country? If so, how much will it cost? As always, cost is a major factor and if the fuel is hard to get or extremely expensive, you might consider leaving your car here.

• What are the rules of the road in the new country? If you intend to drive while you are living there, you need to be sure you understand the country’s rules and regulations regarding driving. Are you going to be able to read street signs? Are you going to be on the other side of the street while driving? All of these are conce

• Can you afford the additional taxes and fees that will be necessary if you have a car in your new country? If not, you might be better off leaving your car here or selling it altogether.
