Infants with acid reflux have been one of the many worries of newly made parents. Before, a screaming infant would often mean they are colicky. But lately, acid reflux has been one of the leading culprits of babies’ discomforts.

Unfortunately for these babies, suffering from acid reflux is very difficult especially since they don’t have any other way of communicating aside from crying. Well naturally, babies have always been spitting out until the age of 6 months. This means that reflux is actually quite natural to them for most cases. But when your baby is already older than 6 months and he or she still experiences that kind of symptoms, then a probable acid reflux might just be the problem.

One could not really easily give oral GERD medications to their infants for those cases, so what’s to be done is alleviate the symptoms and prevent acid reflux from happening though natural home remedies. Here are some that would be very helpful:

  • Position your baby properly. In acid reflux, positioning could be everything. Since acid reflux causes the acid in the stomach to go back up, try going against gravity. 30 minutes after meals, keep your baby in an upright position. Either carry him up against your chest, or use a sling to carry him parallel to you. If you are using a carrier, make sure that the straps are not too tight around your baby because it would just squeeze your baby’s stomach more, triggering acid reflux instead of stopping it.
  • Breast milk is best for babies, especially those suffering from acid reflux. Although some would say that it’s a bit late for that, breast milk formula is indeed a very good way to prevent your baby from suffering acid reflux. Breast milk is a lot easier to digest than the formula milk, which makes it less likely for your baby to regurgitate back acid if he could easily digest the milk he takes.
  • Divide your baby’s meals into smaller portions and let him eat more often. By dividing bigger meals, you are not feeding your baby too much food in one sitting. Letting your baby eat up until he’s full is the most common way of triggering acid reflux. Compared to when having smaller meals, the stomach will be able to digest slowly without having to be really full to the brink.
  • Position your sleeping baby properly. As with adults, the best way to position your baby is by keeping his torso and head slightly higher than his stomach. You can buy a baby hammock, or create it yourself, that would actually cradle your baby comfortably without having to unnaturally fold him in. This way, acid reflux episodes will less likely occur during sleep.

Instead of going for the cure, why not go more on prevention? And instead of curing through drugs and medications, why not go for something natural first? Babies are very fragile and they need to be taken cared of really carefully. Make everything as natural as possible for your baby, after all their bodies are still immature so the more natural it is, the better.
