Whenever you and your spouse separate, there will be a period of time where both of you feel a strong sense of uncertainty and anxiety. Questions will swirl through your head as you lay in bed at night about whether you should contact your family members and friends to inform them about the separation. Other questions that you will have are whether you should file for divorce or at least consult with a divorce attorney about what steps you should take in order to protect yourself and your children. Before you take any action though, read the rest of the article. In this article you will find a short, simple list of steps about how to navigate this time of uncertainty and anxiety. Our hope is that you will put the list to use in your divorce situation and by doing so, will be able to alleviate some of the worry. Step One – Contact Your Family Members And Close Friends. Whenever you and your spouse separate, one of the first things you should do is contact your family members and close friends in order to communicate to them what you are experiencing and hopefully, gain some valuable insight from an outsider’s perspective. If your family members and close friends are legit, then they will be there for you to support you and help you get through this difficult time. Step Two – Simplify Your Life. In order to play it safe, count on your spouse never moving back into the residence with you again. If you are the spouse who left the residence, then count on that the current living arrangement is permanent and plan accordingly. Keep in mind, you are used to living on two incomes, now you will have to live on just one income. Go ahead and start making the adjustment now – doing so will make the divorce process a whole lot easier. Step Three – Protect The Children. If the children are living with you and you want them to live with you permanently, then go ahead and make arrangements to have the children be supervised by your family members and close friends during this time. By doing so, you will be able to protect the children from the mud and the muck of the separation stage of the divorce process. Step Four – Protect Your Money. If you and your ex share joint bank accounts, then go ahead and remove half of the money in those bank accounts over to a separate account that is in your name only. Better yet, if your spouse will cooperate, go ahead and close out the joint account – you take half of the full balance of the account and your spouse will take the other half.
