The most beautiful gift which a mother can get is the gift of pregnancy. Although the period of pregnancy may alter the life of the lady but the fruit which it yields at the end of the day has no match in front of the happiness. During the first week of pregnancy following are the changes which the mother undergoes:- • First of all when the mother is 1 week pregnant, then at this point of time one cannot notice any baby or say even the embryo inside the placenta as this is the phase where the fertilization has just taken place. • During this period, the uterus lining start thickening up and prepares itself for receiving the fertilized egg. Simultaneously the ovarian follicles also mature. While the ovarian follicles mature these release a egg which travels through the fallopian tube looking out for the right sperm that would combine with it to form a zygote, the first step towards the foetus formation. • Although for the doctors it becomes sometimes hard to calculate the exact day and time when the sperm and the egg fertilized to form a zygote, therefore they go by calculating the first day of the last menstrual period which is marked as the starting point of the 40 week pregnancy. Once a pregnant mother is 2 week pregnant the following changes occur:- • The menstrual bleeding ceases which was happening to some extent during the first week of pregnancy. So the mother does not need to use the sanitary pads any more. • If the cervical mucus is noticed then during this stage it is in the stage of maximum stickiness. Apart from stickiness it also becomes thick, cloudy as well as creamy. • The mother during the second week should start monitoring the activities and life style which she practices. The relevance of discussing this point is because it has been proven scientifically that the kind of lifestyle which mother has, it directly affects the foetus health. If the mother consumes alcohol, smoke or have drugs then in such a case there are high chances that abnormalities may arise in the foetus. But on the other hand if the lifestyle is a healthy one, then the child born would be a healthy one. • During the second week make sure that you discuss all kind of medication which you normally take. Discussing your medications with doctor is important as there are some medicines that may cause an ill effect on the foetus’s health and may even lead to the termination of the pregnancy. So in order to escape the trauma it is always better to tell each and everything to your doctor. • The focus on the diet should be one of the prime focus areas. The intake of folic acid should be practised. An intake of 400 mg every day is necessary during this period. It helps in preventing the neural tube defects which is very common during the initial few weeks of the pregnancy.
