The traditional family unit has changed over the last 30 years. It used to be that the father went out to work while the mother stayed home and took care of the kids.
Now the roles have reversed in many households. More fathers are staying home with their kids while the mothers go out to work.
However, there is no training manual when it comes to being a stay-at-home dad. If you want to succeed at it, then you need to organise your day so that you can plan for all that needs to be done.
Learn how to develop the proper habits and routines of the stay-at-home father, and you should be in good shape.
To help you on your way, here are 7 tips for stay-at-home dads.
Car Seat
Having the option of being able to go out and about with your child is paramount. Ensure the baby car seat is correctly fitted in the back seat of your vehicle.
Some baby car seats will not fit in certain vehicles, so ensure you do your research and find out which baby car seats are most compatible.
Conduct Outdoor Activities
Just because you are a stay-at-home dad, it doesn’t mean you have to stay at home all day long. Do not fall into the habit of watching television for 8 hours per day while your kids are otherwise occupied.
You are supposed to be actively spending time with your child and helping them in many different ways. Being outdoors with your child is an excellent activity for you both.
Go on a walk or ride your bicycle with them around the neighbourhood. Get them accustomed to the outdoors, so they get fresh air and exercise. This is important because it will make you both feel better.
Drawing and Colouring
Every child loves to draw and colour. It stimulates their creativity and lets their imagination run wild. Have a portion of the day where you both sit down together and draw or make something.
Either that or you can colour sketches in a colouring book. It is a fun activity for you and your child to do together.
Create a Daily Schedule
The best way to organise your day as a stay-at-home dad is to create a daily schedule of activities. The program should start from the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep.
Include activities like brushing teeth, dropping your child off at school, preparing lunch, going shopping, cleaning the house, going outside, drawing with your child, cooking dinner, putting kids to sleep and anything else that is important.
If you stick to your daily schedule religiously, then you will be surprised how much you can accomplish for you and your child in a given day.
Connect with Other Stay-At-Home Dads
You might feel like the only stay-at-home dad in your community.
However, there are more stay-at-home dads than you might think. It would help if you reached out to them.
There are online discussion groups devoted to stay-at-home dads. You can find the most active ones on Facebook Groups.
Look for groups like Stay at Home Dads, Fit-At-Home Dads, Older At-Home Dads, Dad Bloggers Group and more.
Befriend Local Mothers and Ask for Help
When you take your child to playgroup, school or chat with their friends’ parents, you will likely get to know a lot of their mothers.
Since you are new to the stay-at-home dad experience, do not be afraid to reach out and ask a stay-at-home mum for help.
If raising a daughter, this is especially important as you may not know how to do girly things, such as hair styling and clothes shopping.Further reading
