Many people suffer from anxiety and panic attacks at some point in their lives. However, when people talk about separation anxiety, the first thing that comes to mind is that the condition affects children only. What most people do not know, however, is that separation anxiety in adults is common. If you are an adult suffering from the condition, it means that you experience phases of anxiety when you are separated from someone. Being separated from a spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend or friend can trigger separation anxiety in adults. Usually, this person is a primary caregiver and is central in your life. The good news is that separation anxiety in adults can be managed. Symptoms Separation anxiety in adults is a disorder that manifests itself in several forms. Some of the common symptoms include distress, nightmares, constant worry and even instances of insomnia. Most of the adults who suffer from the disorder may also find that they are reluctant to let go off the person to whom they are attached and subsequently separated from. While these symptoms of separation anxiety in adults are relatively common, their extent varies from one adult to another. For instance, some may experience extreme fear of staying apart from their primary caregiver while for some it could be extreme fear of going to sleep. Separation Anxiety in Adults Relief Unlike separation anxiety which affects children, separation anxiety in adults is a disorder and it is not healthy. Since this is a recently categorized condition, there are no specific diagnosis methods for it. It is also important to note that the condition is usually diagnosed among other conditions and not in isolation. Some doctors provide relief for their patients by treating the symptoms of separation anxiety. However, psychologists have turned towards teaching their patients how to cope with the disorder instead of giving them numerous prescriptions. If you start experiencing the symptoms that come with separation anxiety in adults, it is recommended that you consult a psychologist who will start you on a therapy. Your psychologist will not only equip you with coping skills but he or she will also give you the chance to open up about your fears and how to prevent them from overwhelming you. Panic Attacks and Separation Anxiety in Adults It is common for people who experience separation anxiety to also get panic attacks. Panic attacks may be frequent or once-in-a-lifetime occurrences. While medication and psychotherapy may come in handy to give you some relief, there are certain self-help tips you could use to cope with the two conditions. For instance, you can learn how to relax and control your breathing so that when the panic attacks come, you will know how to manage them. Avoiding caffeine and tobacco is also another self-help tip that comes in very handy since these two substances are known to trigger panic attacks. If you suffer from separation anxiety coupled with episodes of panic attack, life may be difficult for you. However, you can manage the two conditions if you undergo therapy and help yourself cope.
