Your boss is the one to manage all the things that you do on a daily basis. He or she has complete control over many aspects of your work, such as the amount of work assignments you have, the possibility of you being promoted, your salary raise, and so on. But apart from these things, your boss can also affect how satisfied you will be with your job. There are many things that can determine how employees feel about their bosses, such as the way they speak to their workers, how employees are rewarded and reprimanded, and how bosses try to give their workers the best working conditions. In short, the relationship that bosses have with their workers is very important not only in making the company grow, but also in keeping workers happy. And although it seems like your boss has the last say on everything, this doesn’t mean that only he or she has the choice with regards to how the two of you are going to work together. As an employee, you should also show your boss how you prefer to operate. But then again, you need to do your part and show why you deserve the kind of treatment that you want. If you want to establish a good working relationship with your superiors at work, here are some strategies you can use: 1. Exceed their expectations. By referring to your job description, you will see the basic duties and tasks that you are expected to perform. Although you can simply do these basic things and produce only the minimum, this will not take you anywhere in your career nor will this make you impressive to your boss. A good habit to form is going beyond what you are expected. Please your boss by delivering a report ahead of time or expressing your willingness to take on new projects and other responsibilities. 2. Stop waiting for instructions. Don’t waste your time by just waiting to be told what you should do next. Be observant enough to know what the patterns or routines in the workplace are. By doing this, you will have an idea of what you should do next even without being given any instructions or orders. Bosses are always happy to have people who love to be on top of things, because this makes it easier for bosses to keep track of what work has been done and what else needs to be done. Your boss will love you for giving him the report that he needs even before he asks for it. 3. Keep improving. Even if you think you are the best employee in the company, you shouldn’t stop improving your skills and abilities. Make it a habit to do self-reflection from time to time just so you could see what areas of your job you need to be better at. Even the smallest improvements that you will make can certainly have a huge impact in your company, and you will surely be appreciated for it. 4. Be positive. In any workplace, there will always be people who will cause negativity, and you shouldn’t be one of them. Don’t think, however, that you have to please everyone at work every minute. A simple smile is enough to make people feel good about themselves or their situations as well. In no time, your coworkers and your boss will associate you with positivity and feeling good, which will certainly give you value as far as being a team member is conce ed. 5. Offer solutions. Problems are inevitable in any organization or workplace. Although it is your employer’s job to address the issues and problems in the workplace, you can be part of the solution as well. Every time you face difficulties, problems, or challenges, just relax and focus on how you can deal with them without getting your boss involved. You may need his help, of course, and you can do this by presenting to him the problem and the possible ways to resolve them. This way, your boss will only have to choose among the solutions you are offering and he won’t have to stress out about it. 6. Get to know your boss a bit more. You don’t have to talk to your boss in a professional manner all the time. Remember that we are all human beings, and so having some proper personal interaction is a necessity for all of us. You may ask him or her to join you for coffee, perhaps, where you can talk in an informal manner. You both might be surprised that you have many things in common. Be sure to avoid talking about sex, religion or politics so that you can keep the conversation light and relaxing. 7. Never waste his time. As you may know, your boss is a very busy person. You will do him a huge favor if you can protect his time and also prevent other employees from wasting his time. If there is something you don’t understand about your assignment, try to figure it all out on your own first. There is no reason for you to ask for your boss’s help if you can manage things by yourself. In short, try to be independent and have initiative. Don’t you worry because this will never go unnoticed. 8. Don’t get him to mediate. One of the things that bosses hate to do is to have to mediate between his workers. If there are issues between you and another worker, be mature enough to settles things between the two f you without getting your boss involved. Don’t let small issues become huge conflicts because this will also reflect on your maturity and personality. Having or developing a good working relationship with your boss can be your tool in finding greater career opportunities. Although you feel like you will have to do so many things to please your boss, remember that the benefits doing such things can bring make everything worth it.
