Ringworm is a fungal infection that can affect the body and scalp. It appears as a round red ring of dry skin and a center consisting of healthy-looking skin. The term is used to describe the physical appearance of the infection, but it actually has nothing to do with a worm. This infection can appear on the scalp, groin and feet area and the rash can be very uncomfortable because of the itching and it also can prove to be very embarrassing. Ringworm is highly contagious and this makes it extremely difficult to prevent and a person can spread their infections to someone else even before they have any visible signs of it.
The best way to avoid getting ringworm is to stay away from people or animals that are known to be infected with it. Make sure that you do not come in contact with the exposed ringworm area as it is spread by skin-to-skin contact. Make sure if you have it that you do not let anyone use your personal items such as a washcloth, towel or your hairbrush.
Make sure that you wash your hands with soap and water often, especially after having any contact with ringworm. This is extremely important if you spend time at places such as the gym or other locker rooms. Make sure that you wear shoes in the shower as it can be picked up in the form of athlete’s foot or jock itch. Ringworm thrives in areas with a warm and wet environment.
If you discover that you have the fungal infection, treat the area at once and do not put it off. Buy a good anti-fungal cream and apply it to the affected area twice a day. Make sure that you keep the area clean and wash your hands with soap and water several times a day. Also, keep the affected area dry and do not leave your wet dirty clothes lying around in the laundry basket.
The fungus can be killed by cleaning your shower or tub and other surfaces that you come in contact with. Make sure to use a bleach product like liquid bleach diluted with water or bleach wipes. By doing this, you will prevent exposing others to the infection as well as yourself to re-exposure.
After you go to the barber or beautician for a haircut, give your hair a good washing as that will prevent any possible fungal transfer from their tools.
Avoid wearing tight fitted clothing as it tends to make you sweat more and try not to get overheated as stated above, ringworm thrives in a warm, moist environment.
It is important to check your body and those of your small children for signs of the infection. It can hide under the hair on your scalp and if one person in your household gets it, make sure to check the others in your house frequently to stop spread of the infection. Typically, the legions will show up on the skin within 10 days after exposure and on the scalp 10 to 14 days after exposure. It is a good idea to keep your children home if they are infected as to not risk the spread of the infection to others.
The best prevention against ringworm is education. Make sure that you teach yourself and your children how to recognize the signs and symptoms of the infection and teach them to avoid people who already have it.
